Philips Sonicare HX8438/03 Air Ultra Power Flosser, Black

I had heard about water flossers and thought I would try one as I had been using interdental brushes but still felt things could be improved further. After having looked at many different ones and read reviews, this one seemed to have a lesser number of negative reviews, so I went for this one. I was a little nervous about using it, wondering if the pressure would be too much. I was surprised at how easy it was to use. It needs an initial charge of 24 hours and you will need to buy an adaptor as it comes with a 2 pin plug. Fill the reservoir with water, switch on and press the top button until water comes out and you're good to go. I found I need to see what I'm doing as it does deliver a powerful shoot of water and air but the nozzle settled easily between the teeth. It's quite addictive once you get going and I sometimes go round twice. My teeth certainly feel cleaner after using and it does remove small food particles that don't get removed with a toothbrush. I did not experience any bleeding of the gums, maybe because I've been using interdental brushes. So far, so good and I'm really pleased with it.

This is pretty cool and definitely convenient. It's quite hard to tell if this really does the job that's supposed to do because on most cases placebo will kick in and make you say you have so much better teeth than before just because of using this. I'm sure this does something and I'm sure it is helpful, especially for lazy people like myself who never find the time to floss properly. That's basically what this is, a problem solve to those who are on the run all the time and don't actually get the few mins' in the morning to floss because when they entered the bathroom were already 10 mins late. One thing that surprised me is how good the battery is...charged the toothbrush twice and this is still going on the same charge, used everyday twice. The little tank is little....very little. In fact, you can only get one clean on one little tank...but I'm perfectly fine with it, I wouldn't keep mouthwash there for tomorrow anyway. I like it, I use it every day and it makes me think I got better and healthier teeth than before. If your teeth are falling off however, this is not worth it, save the money!

I have used the Sonicare at least once per day for 15 months. If you have receeding gums then this type of product is a must, and the Sonicare airflosser is about the most convenient form of this type of cleaning for teeth and gums. There are regions that string floss, interdental brushing and toothbrushing will just not reach (I've tried them all). This product is not an alternative to the regular floss or brushing but is an adjunct that will significantly enhance oral hygiene. Having not previously taken the best care of my teeth, my dental hygenist is now always surprised at the lack of plaque build up at my regular visits. My Sonicare has just died on me after 15 months. Probably a combination of mechanical wear out an end of life battery, however I consider this a good investment (without pursuing its supposed 2 year warranty) - just through savings at the dentist. I tend to use it aimed to the base of the gaps between teeth just above the gum line. I do this in 2 passes from both the inside and then the outside of the bite line. It can also be aimed recesses that would be impossible to reach with a toothbrush, interdental brushes or string floss, and so can keep teeth viable for longer. The main things to watch out for are to drain the unit of water as much as possible between uses to minimise mould build up (over months), to flush it through with mild bleach and then rinse THOROUGHLY when there is mould build up, and to predominantly use water to operate it normally. On occasion a bit of mouthwash does no harm, but it tends to froth and reduce the dislodging effectiveness of the water jet. I find mouthwash is better applied separately - using a toothbrush if better peneration is needed. On a logistical note, the charging base is compatible/identical to that for the Sonicare Easyclean electric toothbrush (and I assume other similar models) which is helpful in reducing the paraphernalia build up in the bathroom. I hope this is useful in helping you decide whether this is a suitable product for you!

This is my third Sonicare flosser - the first developed cracks under the reservoir whilst still within the original two year guarantee and was replaced by Philips, the replacement only had a one year guarantee (why?) and failed after 14 months ..... the trigger switch just stopped working one morning. This model is identical so I will wait and see! I particularly like the clean, just been to the hygienist, feel around my bridges after using it. Although I don't think it replaces the fuzzy floss, it is good for a quick freshen-up when poking around with floss would be inconvenient/time-consuming. It could be improved by making the water/mouthwash reservoir water-tight so that it did not have to be emptied and dried before popping into my handbag when out for the day and it is a bit vulnerable to being knocked over in the family bathroom but I've found a weighty pot that takes the flosser and the electric toothbrush so they are both safer now. Wouldn't be without it now. My hygienist has noticed the difference but don't forget that the flosser will only do the front of your teeth and through your bridge gaps ... it can't get round to all surfaces.

I've been using this for nearly six months and now feel that I have enough experience of it to make reasoned comments. It does what they say it does but the mechanism sounds a bit agricultural. You need to refill the reservoir with mouthwash every day as the capacity of the device is small. As others have noted after a time it stops squirting the mouthwash and only squirts air - at which time you need to ensure the device is empty of mouthwash and then thoroughly clean the mouthwash filler door and and the handle area around this door. There is a very small hole in this area that allows air to be sucked in permitting the mouthwash to be squirted when the button is pressed. The other thing you need to be aware of is that only certain replacement heads are designed to fit this model and when I bought mine I saw that the Amazon 'people that bought this also bought..." included a set of replacement heads that I also purchased. I recently replaced to original head and when i looked at thr packet it stated that the enclosed heads only fitted the airfloss ultra. After look at the packet it looked like the fiiting was similar, but when examined after opening there were two extra flaps of plastic stopping tme fully inserting the head, but apart from that the fitting was virtually the same. So I grabbed a nail file and spent about a minute filing away these 'wings' and this then allowed the head to click into place; it worked perfectly so I now have this 'basic' model with the 'advanced' design head! My final annoyance also applies to elerctric tooth brushes - the inability to replace the rechargable batteries - appalling built in obsalescence! The manufacturers expect you to throw it away when the battery no longer holds a charge! This is ludicrous - if you are used to using a soldering iron these can be replaced by the owner following instructions widely available on the net for the cost of a replacemnt rechargable battery. If you lack the skill, dexterity or inclination to do this yourself there are several specialists offering this service on a well known auction site. However you change the battery it is cost effective and stops a perfectly servicable electronic device from being thrown away.

Let me first state I take pride in my dental care. I have flossed, and now I have switched to interdental brushes by Tepe. I was quite interested in Air Flossing - as it seems highly convenient and quite cost effective. I initially tried to get onto the product testing for the item - and I registered to be chosen as soon as the testing was released - I filled out the questionnaire, a friend of mine also did. The difference between us is that I actually floss and have a private UK dentist - he does not, and only sees a dentist if there's an issue. He received a product, I did not. That didn't put me off, I purchased this recently and I can honestly say it is not worth the money. It MIGHT be better than nothing, but an inter-dental brush is far superior to this product. Positives: - Design - Makes others who see it more aware of their own dental hygiene practice Negatives: - A gimmick - Doesn't work. Just buy yourself a pack of Interdental brushes.

I cannot emphasise enough how good this product is. It is easy to use , not messy (as pure water only flossers can be-as it uses the combination of air and a small amount of water or mouth wash (leaves a very fresh feeling in your mouth) This one comes with two heads so you can share with your partner. The unit is made of good quality material and a plug in charging unit- one charge lasts over a week. Initially you will likely notice some bleeding from your gums but this has now stopped ( after about a week of usage). My gums an teeth feel very clean and the building up of plaque has stopped. It comes with a 2 year guarantee which surely confirms that tthere is no issue with the long term quality . I bought this one for £49 which I believe is an absolute bargain.

This gives a blast of air and water or mouthwash when angled between your teeth. I find it a pita to use floss or brush sticks as often as my dentist would like me to, so I'm hoping this addition to our household will serve the purpose. It is easily charged and I have mine wired up in a wall cupboard in the bathroom for neatness. It's very easy to use - you fill a little 'tank' on it with water or mouthwash then turn on and press another button for either 1 second auto bursts of fluid or individual blasts. One problem I had was when I held it too close, it caused a 'suction'/airlock, I suppose the flosser has to get its air from somewhere so I just have to learn where to position it for best use. My mouth definitely felt cleaner (though I did not have the "firing chicken around the bathroom" experience of a fellow reviewer, eeeuw!) I have a dentist appointment at the end of January & will let you know if my dentist said my teeth weren't flossed enough, or if I have bleeding gums on his examination! Something I learnt from pamphlet is that it is only recommended to use from the outward surfaces of teeth (On first attempt I had also done from inside,outwards too - hope that makes sense!) can't think why there's a difference but there must be, or it wouldn't be mentioned. So far, I like this product and if my dentist is happy I will upgrade to 5 stars Update 24.01.17: Saw Dentist today - he's pleased with my gums and commends this 'flosser', although with the stipulation that I need to floss as well, to get under the gumline. Oh well, not an 'instead of', but a useful 'as well as' (& for those days you really can't be bothered!)

Für Zahnseide bin ich zu faul. Diese Munddusche hilft mir sehr, meine Zahnzwischenräume sauber zu halten. Das hilft mir auch gegen Druck zwischen den Zähnen von Essensresten. Mit den kurzen Sprühstößen komme ich besser zurecht, als mit dem kontinuierlichen Sprühen von den typischen Geräten am Schlauch. Man muss sich natürlich erst daran gewöhnen.
