Comfy but revealing
Hard to fault these shorts, they're cool, I've felt,A lightweight fabric and a built-in belt. But that fabric itself is has its cons and its pros,When wet, it dries quickly, faster if the wind blows. But the fabric's so thin, and sized small, just a smidgen,It displays well your gender, as well as religion. So friend, be forewarned, while stylish, beware,These shorts will display your equipment down there.

Not durable enough for their intended purpose
I bought these shorts for my husband, who is rather slim. Needless to say they fit him well, but tended to shrink a bit in the inseam. The 10" inseam shorts are actually 9.5" when new, but shrink to under 9" after several washings. The shorts are very light weight and my husband really liked them for hiking. Unfortunately, the seems in the rear have started to pull out. The way that they are constructed has the inner mesh pocket sewn directly to the outer material. Because of this, if the threads come out holding the pocket, it becomes totally useless as a pocket. Supposedly Columbia Sportswear is "tested tough", but in this case not so much! I have contacted Columbia, and they require that the item be shipped back to them for evaluation. In this case they definitely need to evaluate their design. For a supposed hiking short, they seem to be too delicately made.

Read Reviews & Then Order
I picked these shorts up for my hubby and gave them to him this past weekend. It was an early Fathers Day gift,( he was in dire need of some good shorts). I originally ordered them in his regular size and after I ordered I read the reviews. Many all agreed that they were a great short but most of them had to go up one size because they seemed to run a size smaller. So I ordered him two pair and I sized up one size. The verdict is in... the 2 pair that worked were the ones that were the larger sizes. So glad I thought to read the reviews... even though it was an afterthought. He loves the fabric a lot because it's very lightweight and this fabric has moisture wicking capabilities. So the moisture dissipates quickly and helps to keep you feeling dry and not sweaty. Columbia offers a variety of sizes and many colors to choose from. I'd also like to send a big shout out to the vendor that fulfilled my order. I got my order quickly and was processed efficiently. I appreciate the fantastic service and thank them very much. Hope this helps anyone who reads this.

Front pockets 2 3/4 inches deep, useless!
I love Columbia products. They are rugged, light weight, and dry quickly. I have purchased at least 6 pair of shorts over the last 20 years. My problem with these shorts is that they cut off the front pockets to about 2 and 3/4 inches deep, from the lowest seem. Why would they do this? These are cargo shorts! My cell phone falls out of the pocket every time I sit down. I run around in a panic searching for my phone only to find it in the last chair I was in or in my car seat. The stress of losing my phone every time I sit down is unbearable. I have tried to put the phone in the lower front pocket, but it slaps on my front thigh, and then swings around and slaps the back of my leg. The lower front pocket is clearly not the solution. I know that they have cut out all pockets in women's clothing, and I am guessing the same with men's skinny jeans. But I refuse to go out and purchase a European Man Bag, it's not for me. Ha, ha, all kidding aside, Columbia must clearly state that they have changed the product that they have been selling for years. I could have returned it but I had already washed it. I don't really like returning items anyway. What I do is simple stop purchasing from that company ever again. Fool me once, ...

Great shorts for hiking/backpacking
These shorts are perfect for backpacking. I have an athletic body(size 30 waist), and sometimes find that to get the proper waist size, the thigh section of the shorts/pants is too small. This is not the case here. The size 30 with the 12" length is perfect. I would not recommend the shorter(10") length since the 12" ones already hit just above my knee when I am standing still. The material is very light and breathable. They feel very comfortable through a large range of motion and dry quite quickly. In 80 degree weather, after going for a swim in them, they were completely dry in under 15 minutes. These are now my go to hiking and backpacking shorts, I would highly recommend them.

Great First Impression!
So far so good! I am a big guy... 6' 3", 270 lb. I am a handyman and need shorts that can twist, stretch, and bend with all of my movements. II have always worn athletic shorts because normal cargo shorts are to restricting for the movement I do, like crawling through attics (yes, my 270 lb. body actually squeezes into attics LOL).My first impression of these shorts is that they will give me the movement I need, keep me cool on hot days, dry quickly when sweating and give me the pockets I need for phone, wallet and random tools. The real test will be during the next few months when I test the durability of the seems. If I don't edit this review by mid 2016, just assume that they held up and I am happy with the product!Last, shipping was quick and painless, product arrived as expected. The size was perfect. I wear a 42" waste. I ordered the 42" size and they fit perfect and the belt tightens them snug around my waste. I ordered both the 12" length and the 10" length to see which one I preferred. I prefer the 10" for more movement, but either would work. 10" still goes to the middle of my knee when standing up.
