Howard Terpning made his name producing the posters for some of the biggest movies of all time. "Gone with the Wind" "Dr Zhivago" "The Sound of Music" are just a few of them.In 1967, in the midst of his commercial art career Terpning left his home in Connecticut and headed to Vietnam as a civilian combat artist. He was invited by the Marine Corps to document the war by living with the Marines for one month. After two weeks of training he wound up in Da Nang, going out on patrols with combat troops but armed only with camera and sketch pad.Around 1974, Terpning began to tire of commercial work and decided to follow his interest in the American West and Plains Indians. Consequently, he began to transition into fine art by creating paintings and selling them in Western galleries. After three years, he left Connecticut and the commercial art world and moved to Arizona to devote himself entirely to painting the American West.Nobody paints Native Americans as well as Terpning in my opinion. The book contains a generous selection from his Western period with descriptions of the subject matter. Also included are details of the various tribes and an excellent history of the Plains Indians. A lovely book which rewards repeated views.

This is a superb art book with a total focus on North American Indians. The artwork is accompanied by interesting text regarding native life and some insights into the what the artist was trying to achieve in the paintings. Howard Terpning is a truly gifted man to produce such splendid pictures of this glorious bygone age.

Superb, had this book ages ago, but let it go in downsize.Purchased second hand another copy, and glad I did.Terpning sets the standard for factual looking Native American art and this volume demonstrates his superb technique.If you are looking for art of this era, look no further, Howard is the man.A James Bama next on the second hand requirement, another one I sold.Highly recommended.

Oh buy this book. I first saw one of this mans original paintings at Crazy Horse National Monument in South Dakota. Mesmerising. I bought the book because of that. It is full of his amazing paintings.

I like it, my husband loves it so that has to make me happy. Arrived well packaged and well in time for Christmas.

A really good book about a very fine artist. It is very informative and this one has good quality reproductions (whereas other books about Terpning, reportedly, do not).

Book was delivered today in like new condition and very quickly. Thank you, great paintings..
