Used to cover wiring for Softtop storage area on a 370z convertible
I had been looking for this stuff for a while. The wiring for some of the connections that are housed in the storage area for the convertible top of the 370z had this covering and protecting it. Some of the wires shift during the opening and closing operation of the roof and this tape keeps everything secure and protected. The soft cloth of the tape prevents any fraying when wires graze the softtop roof. Bought quite a few rolls. Also wrapped my lawnmower handles as the original covering began to split!

a bit short, spendy on shipping
They are shipped per unit. At time of buying, 4.99 shipping EACH. Need at least two to cover standard drop bars, putting it at about at least 14 dollars to do handlebars. I have the model emblem engraved in my drop bars near the stem, so i wrapped them about an inch and a half or two inches out from the stem and in order to get them to barely reach to the bar end caps, I had to wrap the bars sparingly. Typically, I shoot for the overlap going directly down the center of the tape and had to be very sparse in the curves to get it to stretch the full length of the bars. Aside from that, two coats of schellac and it looks like a light royal blue, giving it good grip; not too slippery or too rough, holding up well. Only other con is spend shipping no combined shipping cost, no super saving shipping.

not enough tape
i like the color and texture of the tape but there is not enough tape to cover a normal drop bar. order two if you want to use this tape. it would have been helpful if the ad mentioned that two were needed to cover one handlebar, unless they think 'handlebar' means one side only. bogus. since the shipping was about as much as the price, i'm not about to order another one.

Good old reliable Tressostar
I've used this same tape for 50 years now. Mostly on bicycle handlebars but I recently made a new wood walking stick and wanted something for the grip so I turned to Tressostar. To me this seems the same as the Velox product I used years ago. It worked well for my application and my photo is after around 20 hours of hiking. I'd never used the shellac method before but as I had some I tried it out. I did about 6 coats letting it saturate the fabric. It did a nice job of sealing and keeping it secure. This tape might not be for everyone and there are certainly a lot of options for handlebars. As for the negative reviews, perhaps some have unreal expectations of simple cloth tape. No, you're not going to get much padding from a layer of cotton tape. Often I've used a double layer of tape on handlebars to give a bit but normally one would rely on padded cycling gloves for padding with this kind of tape. As for coverage, from decades ago one roll covers one side of typical drop bars. It's always been this way. You will find vendors who sell 2 rolls per order as that's the norm for drop bars. With difficulty to apply. Yep it can be a challenge but yes it works. I can't even imagine the number of curved drop bars I've wrapped with this stuff. Road bikes with brake levers that you need to wrap around. The tape does not stretch so you do need to learn how to do this, but once you get the knack it gets easier. Velox is a French company that's been around as long as I can remember. They make/sell a lot of high-end bicycle products and I was happy to see I could still get Tressostar. This may not be for everyone but it gives a nice organic feel for whatever application you use it on.

cloth bar tape
This is the classic old school cloth handlebar tape for road bikes. It's comfortable, looks good, and I find it stays on the bars better than more modern plasticky stuff. It might get a little dirty looking if you use your bike, but that just shows that you use your bike, right? Or if you're really old school you could shellac it but I've never tried that, so I can't say how well that works. Two things you should know about this tape though - one roll will do *one side* of a typical drop handlebar - so you will need two rolls, unless you just need to redo only one side for some reason. Also, the rolls are cut just barely long enough if even that long, you won't be able to overlap the tape as much as you'll probably want to or you'll run out of tape before you get to the stem. Not sure what you can do about that though because I don't know who but Velox makes this kind of handlebar tape, nor have I seen it packaged any other way. The good news is that the edges of the tape still don't curl up like newer kinds of tape do, you can overlap them only a little and they still lay nice and flat. You'll need some electrical tape to finish the ends of your wrapping - when you order this stuff, you just get bar tape, no bar end plugs, no nothing. (but of course if you are using this stuff, you probably already have the old school black rubber Velox bar plugs that you can unscrew and reuse, right?) Or if you're shellacking you can finish the end with twine instead if you're so inclined. (I'm not that ambitious, I used good ol' 3M.)Anyway, if you want that old school look on your handlebars, and/or you just don't feel like trying yet another cork/foam handlebar tape only to watch the edges of the tape curl up on you after a couple months, and/or you occasionally ride without gloves and don't like the feel of cork/foam, this is what you need. Other than the short lengths, I really don't have any complaints about it.
