Don't you need to find a true level item to calibrate this level?

It is possible to level a "level" by flipping it 180 degrees (end-for-end) and setting it up to read exactly the same number of divisions off of ideal. Alternately, one can set up a local "true level" by shimming a surface until it reads the same with the level flipped 180 degrees... In any case "level" can be established as derived standard.

Is this a 0005" per 10" master level?

No that is a 4 inch 98 level good to .005 if an inch.

how do you calibrate this

Find a pretty level surface set 98 on mark with sharpee the edges.. on one end of level are hex nuts above and below that is your ajustment point with level on surface and marked with sharpee look at bubble now turn level 180 degree make sure to put the level back into the marked area look at bubble now a just ..

are the screw and stud supposed to be centered on the post? The one I received had the holes off center.

The upper part is an unmachined casting, but I am sure that Starret makes sure that the holes are drilled centered to the prizm below. It is not relevent that the hole is not centered in the post. Just my two cents.
