This was perfect for our 18 month old on a long car trip. Sometimes he would get a little frustrated and need help so it was good to have 1 parent in not driving to help occasionally but it entertained our 18 month old for hours! We got it because our 18 month old loves unbuckling his high chair which is similar and that entertains him for a while after dinner.

How deep is the zipper pocket? Is it like a "purse" or just a shallow slot?

More like a purse but not that deep, it's just a little pocket I would say fist sized if I had to guess

Does surface washable mean spot-clean only?

I'm not sure, but we tossed the lion in the wash machine with a load of towels and he came out perfectly clean with no issues. We also put it in the dryer on medium heat for 20min and then hung it up to finish drying. Ours looks good as new!
