World of Warcraft: Thrall: Twilight of the Aspects

The book arrived brand-new and in perfect condition. Thrall: Twilight of the Aspects is one of those Warcraft books that mixes personal stakes with big-scale world events. It’s more about character and duty than nonstop action, showing Thrall navigating leadership and the responsibilities of the dragonflights. The story moves quickly enough to stay engaging, but it’s the moments of reflection and the political tensions that give it weight. You get a sense of the scale of Azeroth and how much falls on Thrall’s shoulders without it ever feeling boring. Somewhat correct chronological Warcraft novel timeline: 1. Excellent novel. Christie Golden does a great job moving the storyline along.

As Metzen said in a comment to another review, this obviously happens prior to patch 4.2. There is some parallel with the journey Thrall goes through in the 4.2 questline (in fact, it's kind of hard to see how he would have to deal with his issues yet again after the events of the book), but there are always going to be issues translating between the formats of book and game. That would also be why the character mentioned dead is still in the game in some places. You'll also notice you can go to Nagrand to Sholazar Basin to Sethria's Roost and see Hemit Nesingwary in all three places within minutes. Just because a character occurs in a previous part of the game doesn't mean the story hasn't advanced and things are different for them in the current storyline. Issues of games versus books aside, this was a pretty fun read. If you're reading it, you're most likely a Warcraft fan who wants to continue to follow the story of the various characters, and Thrall is one of the most beloved characters in the Warcraft universe. The book delivers on that promise. More backstory is filled in and it certainly made me look at some in-game events in a different light. That said, it's extremely short. I finished over 90% of it during one single milling session. I'm a pretty fast reader, but even so, a book that takes me only two or three hours to read is definitely low on the value for my money scale. The Warcraft books need to be longer or the Kindle prices much, much lower. A physical paperback costs less than the ebook versions of a lot of these!

WoW! Spoiler free Seriously, wow. Best World of Warcraft book I have read yet. Even bests the WoW book Arthas. Christie Golden's Writing is so good here I was just left speechless. She manages to take the Cataclysm expansion of the WoW MMO and make such a well thought out, provoking, character driven immersive story that I immediately reread it after finishing it the first time though. Let me say I hate the Cataclysm expansion. I hate it. It drove me away from wow. It destroyed my guild. Half of whom quit. The story seems nonsensical, the world and lore in my opinion really did have a cataclysm. And I wanted nothing to do with it any more. But I have read several of Mrs. Goldman's books and have always loved her work and so I gave this a try. It seriously made me want to give Cataclysm and the World of Warcraft another try. It's just that damned good. It just brings everything together. It takes a very famous character (Thrall) and adds new layers of depth to him. She introduces new characters so well that I immediately care about what happens to them. No death in this book feels empty. She created and epic quest. A journey. And she nails it spot on. The only complaint I have with the book is the final big bad Character reveal. It just felt rushed and shoe horned in. You really have no idea who is character is or why the heck they are doing this. BUT! But, that doesn't detract from the story in a major way. I only wish there was an extra chapter or two to flesh this plot point out. Honestly though, she has created such an epic tale here that I feel that any and every World of Warcraft player should read this. Blizzard should mail copies of this book and her last Cataclysm based book "The Shattering" (buy it and read it before this if you haven't already) to every subscriber who has bought the newest expansion of the game. She redeems the lore of the expansion. She redeems the lore of the World of Warcraft. Buy this book if you're a fan of WoW. Buy her books if you're a fan of great story telling. Please buy this book.

This story is about Thrall, the once great Warchief of the Horde. He is now a Shaman trying to assist the Earthen Ring in healing Azeroth from the destruction Deathwing has wrought upon it. But Thrall is struggling and is unable to perform his duties the way he needs to. Ysera approaches Thrall and asks him to complete some tasks for her that are important to the well being of the Dragonflights. As Thrall completes the task, they lead him on to others, and he soon finds himself traveling through time to find Nozdormu and prevent an opponent from an alternate timeline from rearranging history. Thrall witnesses the creation of the next Blue Aspect, and then assists the four dragonflights (red, green, blue, and bronze) in defeating a chromatic creation of Nefarian's. Through all of this, Thrall learns more about his own inhibitions and how to overcome them. Through assisting the Dragonflights, he has learned how to better help the Shamans of the Earthen Ring heal Azeroth. This novel was beautifully written. The prose was fluid and each sentence added to the story instead of becoming filler to make it longer. Blizzard chose great authors to illustrate the world we play in on a daily basis. I was thrilled to read in this book that Thrall could never be an Aspect, a rumor that was going around for months leading up to Cataclysm about the next Black Aspect being Thrall. I also learned that a lot of people who were drawing conclusions from this novel weren't reading it very clearly. For example, someone on MMO Champion forums said there was a dragon legend wherein the Titans created the moon, making Elune a false deity (which could then shatter the Night Elven way of life), and they drew this conclusion from this book. There is nothing in this novel that supports that. The legend is the two moons were in perfect alignment when the Aspects were created by the Titans and it is speculated by the dragons the only time another Aspect can be brought forth is when the moons are in alignment again, which is when the next Blue Aspect is chosen. If you buy this book, even if you're not a Warcraft player, I'm sure you're going to love it!

The story of Thrall's adventures while assisting the Bronze Dragonflight is nothing short of amazing. Thrall will take you back to memories from older books that Ms. Golden has written and alter them in such agonizingly exciting ways. It's an intense emotional ride that makes you pang for the peace and self realization that Thrall desperately seeks. it'd recommended for both the Horde who should appreciate their former Warchiefs powers even more, and for the Alliance who needs to realize that the Horde are not all monsters. Excellent read, would definitely recommend it.

I enjoy Christie Golden's work, and I think she's a decent writer. So I have to ask, did she just have this ghost written? The plot is interesting, with Thralls journey with the elements being balanced out by the interesting insight into dragons. But it's short and moves at a breakneck pace. The angsty Thrall is barely around before he's cured of that, the dragons have no character development beyond "spoiler becomes an aspect, spoiler is grief stricken and then suddenly okay, etc." That said the book did have some cool fun and interestingly written scenes such as the vision scene towards the end. I can't help but feel that this would've been more interesting in game than in a book. The break neck place also leaves you with a dissatisfied taste in your mouth. You get to the end and no real conflict has been resolved; this novel feels like a setup orthe first half to another novel. Either way, i'd recommend lookig for this book in a library or getting someone to tell you what happens. I don't regret my money spent on this but I wouldn't mind having it back now either.

This was a very good book. Very rarely do I pick up a book and read it front to back in less than 24 hours, but this one was one of those books. It has a very good story line, the imagery it paints for you is wonderful and it does answer some questions and you may have while you are playing the game, although it does create a lot more as well. If you are a fan of World of Warcraft I would get this book and I would read it, you will enjoy it and you will want to read it again.

Before I get into my brief review - I've read pretty much most of the books and was a WoW player from Vanilla up until MoP. WoW lore is something I very much enjoy and feel Christie Golden is the best of the authors we have experienced so far. Richard Knaak has some good titles as well (also some misses!) and I think Aaron Rosenberg did well on Tides of Darkness. But back to this book. Thrall being one of the key characters in WoW lore, Golden got this one absolutely spot on with some appearances from other key and secondary characters. The plot is definitely something that will keep the reader wanting to find out more to see this book through to conclusion. The timeline is set around Cataclysm and really delves deep into the character that is Thrall since dropping the mantle of Warchief. Without giving away any spoilers, I also find, personally, enjoy any part of WoW that utilises the Caverns of Time. This is a MUST read for WoW fans and fantasy book readers alike. Definitely top 2 or 3 in all books thus far in my view.

One of the better WOW books I have read.

Since Christie Golden released Arthas: Rise of The Lich King I have become a fan of her books and since these aren't avalaible in the UK they are well worth the read! I'm a big World of Warcraft player and my biggest love is the Lore side of the game and Christie delivers the Lore perfectly and helps tie up any loose ends like this one fits in just before patch 4.2 Rage of the Firelands. People might say she drags out some of her descriptions but it helps the reader visualise the story. Thrall is one of my favourite characters in the WoW world and Christie you have done it again! I look forward to your next WoW book Worth the read guys
