In addition to the title story, this selection of twenty-seven stories includes one of Maupassant's most famous tales, "The Necklace," and "Le Horla," a tale with strange parallels to the author's own descent into madness, as well as many other provocative and often chilling works--spanning the whole range of human experiences--from low farce, to high tragedy. About the Series: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the broadest spectrum of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, voluminous notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more. Review: Interesting life and penetrating fiction - du Maupassant's life is more interesting than his fiction and that is saying a lot. His stories dissect the how and why of our feelings in a more concise and penetrating manner than many other writers. Highly recommended. Review: Bad service - It is not downloading

Tales of Life Love Merriment and Madness
An excellent collection of 27 stories from a master of the trade. De Maupassant covers the human condition via first rate comedy ( "The Umbrella") to tragedy ("Le Horla" being particularly poignant ; a mans decent into madness -a path De Maupassant was to follow in real life). He exposes the absurdity of "Position and standing in society" ("The Coward") , the meaninglessness of politics to the everyday man ("A Coup d'รฉtat") the cruelty of man to animals ("Coco")-the list and breadth is huge!). You can see De Maupassant's influence on writers such as O Henry ("The Necklace" could be straight out of an O Henry collection!) and Damon Runyon, and this just serves to highlight how great and timeless De Maupassant is.. A book that will always come with the strongest of recommendations. Superb.

Fantastic
I just loved this collection of short stories. It has a mixture of everything. However my favourite has to be "A Day in the Country". Absolutely breathtaking, such heady descriptions. "the Necklace" was also fantastic. It is refreshing to read short stories, dipping in and out, rather than the long haul through a novel. Great.
