12 Bar Blues by Scott Weiland
.com
When an artist comes back from the kind of trauma that dogged Scott Weiland following the release of Stone Temple Pilots' Tine Music ... Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop, said artist often comes back a changed person--and that's exactly what this surprising, fascinating solo bow shows Weiland to be. Middle finger pointedly directed at his past and eyes firmly affixed to his navel, Weiland slithers through the dauntingly dense disc with little of the simplicity implied in the title. Shaky and slurred, songs like "Where's the Man" and "Barbarella" conjure up some mighty frightening images without resorting to the brute force that was once Weiland's weapon of choice. Wrapped in grandiose post-glam, drag-heavy on strings, sequencers, and special effects, 12 Bar Blues is a daring leap, and it's clearly been done without a safety net. --David Sprague

Review
Now out on his own after a much-publicized drug detox, [Scott Weiland] eschews heavy guitar rock for a lighter but equally familiar pop psychedelia.... But with its predictably spaced-out song titles ("Desperation #5"), nonsensical lyrics ("All the tangerines/they taste like jelly beans") and thin, whiny vocals, 12 Bar Blues shouldn't prove a threat to any living legend.... -- People[12 Bar Blues is] schizoid but it makes sense. There's a unifying atmosphere of sadness, expressed with the scarred honesty of a man who's made it back from the edge. Although none of this will appeal to fans of the terminally one-dimensional Stone Temple Pilots [Scott Weiland's former band], Scott's not ready to be given up for dead just yet. And from the sound of it, he doesn't deserve to be. -- NME

Awesome Album!
I think this is one of Weiland's best works, as well as one of the best albums of the late 90's. It is often overlooked, since he has about a dozen or so 5 star records under his belt, ie. just about the entire STP catalog, the two albums from Velvet Revolver, Art of Anarchy, and his solo works. 12 Bar Blues is the definition of Alternative music, and virtually every song is really good. This album really shows that he was the creative force behind every project he's ever been involved in. And, as usual, the vocals are great. I highly recommend this one.

Scott explores
This is a very different CD from anything you expect from STP's bad ass frontman - but he has a softer side and likes to delve into different sounds which is cool. This CD features alot of piano which is great - some catchy bopping songs, some slow and sweet. Scott plays all sort of instruments and his brother, Michael, is drummer for several songs. I love Lady Your Roof Brings Me Down. -

In defense of Scott Weiland's greatest work
This album is what the real Scott Weiland was really about. This is the same subtle, well-shrouded weirdness that has always pulsated beneath the familiar hooks of STP, except here that weirdness is blown up to gargantuan proportions and given the spotlight. I have been an Ornette Coleman fan from a very young age, and I have listened to John Lennon and Yoko Ono's "Life With The Lions" all the way through, and yet as the years have gone by I have settled on the opinion that this probably the single weirdest album I have ever heard. The reason that this is weirder than the other music I just mentioned is that the music I just mentioned is very blatantly avant-garde, whereas this is layers of weird wrapped in layers of impossibly and enviably commercial hooks and melodies (per the Scott Weiland gold standard) wrapped in more layers of weird wrapped in god-knows-what-else. It plays around with conventions of genre, combines genres that should seemingly never be combined, sends them through the filter of a drugged-out, possibly unstable mind and spits them out the other end somehow sounding like a million bucks. Much credit also goes to Daniel Lanois and also the mysterious and Wikipedia-pageless Blair Lamb (was it always just Scott behind the board the whole time?) on the production front, for understanding what really made this artist tick and helping to pull it to the forefront. Just as a disclaimer, I have always hated the lyrics to "Jimmy Was A Stimulator" and I think they're totally boneheaded and gross. Is it Scott making a commentary on his own meathead reputation? I don't know, probably not, he probably wasn't that smart. Also, on "Son", he unintentionally clues the listener in that he views his child as a kind of status symbol. But that's what happens when you don't think about how to write a song and just do it, sometimes things come out that you don't want to. For some reason the icky parts like that make me like it even more. It's certainly not going to be for everybody, but if it's not for you, you should know that before he died Mr. Weiland made sure to bury enough stream-of-consciousness nonsense and offbeat imagery underneath the ridiculously radio-friendly riffs of STP that it has probably already infected your brain, whether you know it or not. Pick up this album if you want to understand what was really going on underneath all those STP songs everyone loves to hate (or hates to secretly love?)

Scott's Awesome!
Just received this cd and I love it! Scott is so creative--Such an awesome talent whether he is working with STP (their last album was amazing!) , his former band Velvet Revolver, or his solo work. His last solo project "Happy in Galoshes" is so incredible. And his Christmas cd was the only holiday music I listened to this past season and it made my Christmas. Every Scott Weiland fan should have "12 Bar Blues" in their collection. So glad Amazon made this available!

Good CD, not great
I would love to hear a rock album from Scott. His vocals are always amazing but I don't care for experiments in sounds.

12 Bar Blues
Ein Meisterwerk seines Schaffens. Leider viel zu früh gestorben. "Only the good die Young!". Auch bei den Stone Temple Pilots ist er unersetzbar.
