I love them!... Had them for a while!... Work great for me!
I absolutely love these speakers as they require no batteries and are easily portable...These are basically the best alternative for people who hate wearing headphones (such as myself) unless when traveling by plane, train or bus (as using headphones is the polite thing to do, really no other choice in the matter)...The funny thing about this speakers though... i remember talking to my cousin one day, about how i had wished there were speakers that didn't require any batteries or charging than he told me he had a pair that did just that... i was shocked! (years ago at the time)... i also remember being out on the saco river kayaking one day with my cousin and he told me that they still work even when they get soaked by water... then he just outright dunked them underwater, took them back out and shook the water out of them and turned his ipod touch on and they still worked with no quality degradation whatsoever!... now that's awesome!Personally, i think that sony should have put a disclaimer of some sort somewhere on the product saying "Disclaimer: Results may vary dependent upon the device the speakers are plugged into"... because that's really the honest truth right there... as i've tried using these speakers with a ton of electronics i own and they were either a hit or miss... so i'll list right here what i've tried the speakers with...Works Good with...+ Mp3 Players... Creative Zen 2gb, Ipod 80gb (5th Gen), Ipod Touch 4... I'm pretty sure that just about all mp3 players should work good with these speakers... so long as you don't expect thumping bass and very loud music (that's not what they were intended for)+ Cd Players+ Cassette PlayersWorks Bad with...- Phones... Droid X, Iphones, any phones... just about every phone my buddies and i have tried out, you could barley hear any audio at all! (sounded like whispering)... why they don't work well with phones, i have no idea!... don't even bother using / buying these speakers if you plan on using them with your phone (better off using the internal phone speaker instead, or buying battery / wall outlet amplified speakers)- Laptops... Macbook Pro, Toshiba, probably any laptop... same situation as the phones, they don't seem to register, and sound like a whispering level... so your better off with battery / wall outlet amplified speakers- Xbox 360... tried plugging these into my 3.5mm mic / speaker adapter to no avail... just like the phones and laptops couldn't make out peoples voices at all!... but when i used a pair of wall outlet powered speakers (Logitech z130)... i could pick up everyone's voice on live unbelievably!... because i swear when you put voice output through the tv only... your not hearing everyone's voice as you should while playing on live, like you do with some battery / wall outlet powered desktop speakersi hope this review of mine was helpful (for at least some of you)... for me not having to use headphones for my portable audio devices lacking an internal speaker is a must!... i use my Creative Zen 2g (that has a built in speaker) for biking, hiking, walking... since it's so small (has just enough songs on it, even though by today's standards, 2gb is nothing)... and use my ipod 80gb for outside with the sony speakers on my backyard patio... than when i'm in my house i use these sony speakers with my ipod touch 4 for internet radio streaming (pandora, slacker, etc)... audio quality is plenty a good for the size of my place both inside and out... and the best thing is when your having a party that's running into the wee early am hours... you never have to worry about the music volume level going up abruptly disrupting neighbors, because we all know how loud some drunks can get especially when it comes to yelling over LOUD music!... lol... so to sum it all up... these speakers are a WIN WIN! (in my book)... so best of luck!

TRASH, TRASH, TRASH
DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY.They are so low you can hardly hear them.Just add $10 and buy Sony SRS-TP1. They sound MUCH BETTER, do not require any batteries, either, and are more portable.

Excellent for listening to podcasts in bed or shower
I use these speakers mainly for listening to podcasts in bed or in the shower, and for these purposes, these are excellent speakers. For use in bed, I want something that will not consume power when the audio stops, since I may be asleep when that happens, and for the shower, I want speakers that do not use any external power, so that I don't risk electrocuting myself. As passive speakers that work the same way as earphones, these meet both of these requirements. But they are significantly louder than earphones. The hole you see below each speaker is a reflex duct, which uses airflow to increase the bass volume in small speakers, so that they sound like bigger speakers. I control the volume through my MP3 player, which, with rockbox installed, lets me specify precise decibel levels. At the top volume of 6db, I can easily hear what people are saying while I am taking a shower, though a hair dryer will still drown it out. At a volume of -14db, I can comfortably listen with the speakers by my pillow, and the sound hardly carries beyond my bedroom. The reflex ducts are great for the low to mid ranges, but it doesn't help the upper range. In these speakers, the upper range cuts off at 15,000Hz, well below the more typical 20,000Hz. While this makes them inadequate for most music, this range is just fine for podcasts, because speech is normally midrange. The cord is like an earphone cord. It consists of two cords, each one extending from the plug to one of the speakers. You may pull the cords apart to increase the distance between the speakers. Since the cord is one meter in length, you can get nearly two meters distance between the speakers by pulling the cords apart. I have chosen not to do this, because I mainly use them for monophonic podcasts, and I prefer the convenience of keeping the cord manageable. In fact, I have locked the speakers together at the bottom and use them as a single unit. With them locked together, I can easily stick them on a rack above my shower with the MP3 player stashed in an earphone pouch hung from a hook, and in bed I am more comfortable having them on my left side than my right.

you get what you pay for
inexpensive, portable; sound like headphones, need to be up close to hear; nice and small, light weight; priced right; suitable for the price

Okay for iPod, LOUSY for laptop
When they say "Passive," they're not kidding -- As many of the 1-star reviews have stated, these are actually quieter (read: barely audible) than laptop internal speakers. Although they did kick out a little more sound from an iPod Nano than if you plugged in headphones and cranked to to eleven. Moral of the story: if you plan on listening in a fixed location, get a set of powered speakers; if you plan on listening to an mp3 player on the go, these will do a mediocre job for just ten bucks. There is likely a better bargain speaker out there though.

Convenience over sound quality? It depends.
What you get out of these speakers will depend very much on what you plug them into. I have plugged them into 3 devices with very good results, in terms of volume; and pretty darned adequate results, in terms of sound quality.I have used them with my Dell Inspiron 1420 laptop, my Creative Zen Vision:M MP3 player, and my Blackberry 8330 Curve, all of which are capable of providing enough signal to these speakers to be too loud for the typical office environment. I absolutely loved the improvement in the experience of these plugged into my laptop whilst watching a movie in bed, with the smallish speakers laying on either side of the lapdesk. For what they are intended to offer you, these are a good value, and seem to be well enough made to be fairly durable.

Great set of speakers for the office
I purchased these to use at work, so I could listen to streaming radio. I've had no issues with them at all; they work great! Though I typically keep them low, out of respect for co-workers, they get pretty loud. The quality of sound isn't terrible, but it's not anything spectacular, either. You're not going to impress a girl with these, but they'll get the job done.

Small Speakers, small sound
I bought these for my desktop,in order to have a little bit of sound (not to watch DVDs or play games). Well, a little bit of sound is what I got! I have bought speakers at this price range before and these are the worst volume wise. They look lovely and are small enough to put in front of a monitor, but the volume leaves alot to be desired. If you want to watch programs on your PC or play games I do not recommend these.
