This book is awesome. Seeing such vivid and wondrous photos the universe, and reading explanations of how the photos were composed is beyond incredible.

There is so much about this book to recommend. There are marvelous photographs that one will want to look at again and again. Regions of star formation, gaseous clouds where stars are formed. There are photographs of spiral galaxies and other types of galaxies. The Hubble telescope can see 90 percent of the way outward and backward in time to the big bang itself. Photographs of exploding supernova fragments, The book describes Cepheid variable stars used to calibrated distances. Other star types are described and shown - red and blue supergiant stars and regions where astronomers are fairly certain there are white dwarf stars and in another region a neutron star can be found ( page 184 , remnant of supernova explosion in Large Magellanic cloud) . All the photographs are catalogued with what they are, where they are located and the distance from Earth. One can learn a lot from reading this book. There is also the history of the telescope, of how it has been serviced and photographs of the space telescope in orbit and being serviced by various astronauts including astronaut John Grunsfeld. The story of how things went wrong and the tenacity to get things right adds a more human touch to the story. The book describes how thanks to the Hubble space telescope our view of the universe we live in has been enriched enormously.

It was a surprise father's day gift and my stepdad loved it so much. He said the photos are spectacular.

WOW what can I say? This book is incredible. The pictures and write ups, I love Astrophysics and am studying it on my own. The Hubble Telescope has a major to play in Space exploration. And a awsum team worked their butt off to make it and put it in Space.

Fantastic book with great pictures and very informative text on the history of Hubble and its role in science. I've given 4 stars because I personally wish it had more of Hubble pictures. That aside, the pictures it does have are beautiful and the information it gives about Hubble makes it well worth it.

Much, much grander than I anticipated! And I'd purchased pretty much the cheapest one available, too. Thanks so much. My grandson and I will enjoy it for years.

I bought this as a present for my space mad mother. The photos are amazing quality and my mum finds it fascinating. Wonder when they are bring out a James Webb.

Questo volume non è il solito libro di astronomia pieno di formule incomprensibili ma è un vero e proprio museo portatile che celebra un quarto di secolo di scoperte fatte dal telescopio spaziale più famoso della storia. Si tratta di un'opera curata dal National Geographic che raccoglie le immagini più spettacolari catturate da Hubble trasformando la scienza complessa in pura arte visiva da tenere sul tavolino del salotto. Punti di forza La qualità della carta e della stampa è esattamente quella che ti aspetti da un editore di questo calibro e rende giustizia alle oltre centocinquanta fotografie presenti all'interno che spaziano dalle nebulose colorate alle galassie lontanissime. È incredibile vedere su carta stampata ad alta risoluzione quelli che vengono definiti gli Hubble All-Stars ovvero gli scatti più iconici che hanno cambiato per sempre il nostro modo di immaginare l'universo e che su uno schermo retroilluminato perdono sempre un po' della loro profondità naturale. Aspetti da considerare Devi tenere presente che si tratta di un'edizione in lingua inglese quindi se non mastichi bene la lingua potresti perderti le spiegazioni testuali che accompagnano le foto e che raccontano la storia dietro ogni scoperta. Inoltre essendo stato pubblicato nel duemilaquindici per l'anniversario dei venticinque anni non troverai le immagini più recenti o i confronti con il nuovo telescopio James Webb che ha superato tecnologicamente Hubble negli ultimi anni. Esperienza d'uso Immagina di avere ospiti a cena e di lasciare questo libro appoggiato sul divano o sul tavolo basso. È matematico che qualcuno lo aprirà per curiosità e finirà per perdersi tra le pagine ignorando la conversazione perché l'impatto visivo di una galassia a spirale stampata a tutta pagina è qualcosa che cattura l'occhio e fa sentire tutti improvvisamente molto piccoli di fronte all'immensità del cosmo. Conclusione e consiglio È un acquisto obbligato per chi ama la fotografia spaziale o per chi vuole un oggetto d'arredamento intelligente che fa sempre la sua figura in casa. Lo sconsiglio invece a chi cerca un trattato di astrofisica aggiornato all'ultimo minuto o a chi si aspetta un libro di testo scolastico perché qui lo scopo è emozionare gli occhi più che bombardare il cervello di dati tecnici. La dritta in più Anche se è in inglese non farti spaventare perché la struttura del libro è talmente visiva che funziona benissimo anche come strumento per spiegare lo spazio ai bambini o ai ragazzi semplicemente guardando le figure e commentando insieme i colori e le forme strane delle nebulose senza bisogno di tradurre ogni singola parola.
