So two 4 inch thick mattresses?

I bought two 6 inch mattresses and it goes to the very top of the daybed. I'd say the 4inches would be better

Do I actually need 3 mattresses for the daybed and trundle?

Just two twin mattresses. The two mattresses are stacked on top of each other when it is a daybed. When it is pulled out it becomes a king bed, with both mattresses side by side.

So, this does not come with any mattresses or does it just come with thin mattresses?

No, it does not come with a mattress

Can you store one mattress under the bed?

Since there are drawers under the bed there is no room for a mattress. I just put both mattresses on the daybed. It is a little tall but not too bad and I am short.
