Mayco Jungle Gems Crystal Glaze - Blue Azure, Pint

A very cool color. Does definitely differ from firing batch to firing batch so the consistency is a bit odd. I recommend doing a fairly thick layer and test tiles with some different conditions on them before putting them on your favorite piece. Have gotten some really nice color out of this though. One of my favorites so far.

This glaze is great when fired correctly at cone 06! Mayco Jungle Gems Crystal Glaze - Blue Azure is semi-translucent with blue/green crystals. I was pretty heavy handed with how much I used for each coat and I didn’t get that milky look that can show up from using too much glaze; which is great for someone new (like myself) to art. I did notice a dimpling affect where the crystals burst, but that should probably be attributed to my inexperience rather than to the product itself. I did find that I had to forcefully break up the crystals from the bottom of the bottle and stir to get them to distribute throughout the glaze which could account for some of the issues others have reported. I also shook the bottle between coats to keep the crystals from settling while the first coat dried. This was the only product I found for low fire work that mimicked the color play found in some of the high fire glazes. Overall, I’m very pleased on how my class projects turned out. For my small dragonfly bowl and the turtle in the larger bowl, I used 2 coats of Mayco Elements – Sea Green for the base and then 2 coats of the Blue Azure. For the water around the turtle, I used 2 coats of Mayco Elements – Mirror Blue for the base and then 2 coats of the Blue Azure. I think both came very close to the examples found on the Mayco website. The website has a section for glaze combinations that is extremely helpful to see how this glaze reacts with different base glazes. The site also shows how their glaze presents fired at cone 06 and cone 6. I would definitely recommend this product!

If you truly want your piece to have the depth of color and color variations shown on the container, DON'T follow the recommended application procedures on the label. Reading the directions, it tells you to apply 2 or 3 coats and fire at Cone 6. Not being familiar with this glaze, and not wanting it to run, I applied 2 heavy coats and fired it at Cone 6. It came out a very light pale blue mixed with white. After a chat with our glaze guy at our studio, he said he was familiar with this glaze and told me to add another 3 coats to the piece and we would re-fire it. So, after a total of 5 coats, I finally got the pleasing blue/green color variation displayed on the container. Bottom-line, don't be afraid to "go heavy" on the application. Just make sure that if you're painting the outside of a vertical piece, you use a cookie when you fire it and go lighter when glazing the bottom. This glaze will run at Cone 6.
