Find happiness by living fully in the present with this definitive guide to ichigo ichie --the Japanese art of making the most of every moment--from the bestselling authors of Ikigai and The Four-Way Path . Each moment in our life happens only once, and if we let it slip away, we lose it forever--an idea captured by the Japanese phrase ichigo ichie (pronounced itchy-GO itchy-A ). Often spoken in Japan when greeting someone or saying goodbye, to convey that the encounter is unique and special, it is a tenet of Zen Buddhism and is attributed to a sixteenth-century master of the Japanese tea ceremony, or "ceremony of attention," whose intricate rituals compel us to focus on the present moment. From this age-old concept comes a new kind of mindfulness. In The Book of Ichigo Ichie , you will learn to... appreciate the beauty of the fleeting, the way the Japanese celebrate the cherry blossoms for two weeks every April, knowing they'll have to wait a whole year to see them again; use all five senses to anchor yourself in the present, helping you to let go of fear, sadness, anger, and other negative emotions fueled by fixating on the past or the future; be alert to the magic of coincidences, which help us find meaning among the disconnected events of our lives; use ichigo ichie to help you discover your ikigai , or life's purpose--because it's only by learning to be present, to be tuned into what catches your attention and excites you in the moment, that you can identify what it is that most motivates you and brings you happiness. Every one of us possesses a key that can open the door to attention, harmony with others, and love of life. And that key is ichigo ichie . comfy and cozy
The book was helpful for mindfulness. I’m not the most patient person but this book made me feel like slowing down can be possible for me. It was also very informative on traditional aspects and people that inspired certain sections of the book

Love this book! Great reminder to be present
We hear all these suggestions in the world about being present. And they're all great. But after returning from a trip to Japan, I really connected with this book. You don't have to have traveled there to get the thinking here. But for me, it was more connective. A fast read, but I am reading it over and over b/c I forget stuff almost instantly. Worth buying

Live in the moment and appreciate the present!
To find peace, happiness and contentment, live in the present moment. If you are unhappy or sad about something, it has already taken place and you can't change it. Forget about it and live in the present. If you are worried or anxious about something, it has not happened yet. You cannot predict the future and you cannot really control it. Come back to the present moment and find joy in the here and now. The book suggests using all your senses to find happiness and beauty in the present moment.

It was interesting, but not mindblowing.
I was assigned this book for a class of human behavior and the great praise from the teacher really got me curious about this philosophy. Even thought it taught me some things that I hadn’t encountered before, if you’re mildly familiar with the Buddhas path and Zen Buddhism, most of the lessons taught here will be a repeat of the same formula: keep yourself in the present.

I love this book — it’s short, beautiful, and deeply inspiring. It gently reminds us to cherish the essentials in life and live each moment fully. A true little treasure — and a perfect gift to offer someone you care about.
