It is Gluten Free. It also says on the label that it is free of MSG, lactose and preservatives

How does one open the top of the container- cannot figure out?

There is a green slide on top with multiple holes (for shaking) on one end. Push the slide as far as it will go to "open" the holes to the product in the container. I found that the holes clog up after a while, so I have to wipe off the top of the container every so often.
