Champion Traps and Targets EasyBird Auto-Feed Doubles Trap

Awesome trap, commercial quality and ultra solid construction. Works great if you follow the instructions to the "t". Read and follow every single step CAREFULLY! 22 degrees of angle? Mandatory and won't load or jams at much less angle. We finally used our iphone leveling app and figured out 22 degrees is a higher trajectory than any of us thought! Also, if the loading arm is slightly in-or-out from the 4.5" to 5.5" sweet-spot the machine will break clays or won't load. BUT... IF you follow the instructions carefully, which after about 5 tries we finally did all of them, carefully, then it works perfectly. Next thing is loading AFTER the first time if different from the first time. When you first load the machine the arm is at 12 o'clock and its super easy to load. The clays sit on a little shelf-plate and its completely intuitive. Unfortunately after that first time it wants to load with arm at the 9 o'clock position, which isn't nearly as intuitive. The lip of the first (bottom) clay must rest on what becomes a very small 3mm edge of the sliding plate, and the second clay from bottom must be held against the upright posts by the small rubber brake. To load ever after the first time you must pull the little rubber brake back an inch, then carefully slid the first couple clays into position. The rubber brake must rest on the SECOND clay, letting the first one hang down ever so slightly. While not intuitive (especially after the first and very easy loading) this is how you do it. Took us a long time trying and wishing we could get the arm back to 12 o'clock, but it does work at 9 o'clock following above advice. No way to get back to 12 o'clock that we figured out.

Very well built and looks to be able to handle monthly use without the worry of it breaking down. Installation wasn't hard but a couple of steps were not crystal clear and the included DVD was scratched and not usable. The safety ring that helps keep you clear of the throwing arc is probably the most disappointing piece on the machine. After throwing less than 10 targets one or two of the plastic tubing comes loose from the friction attach points. Not a huge deal but a annoyance. The tension bolt that pulls the spring to let the clays fly farther would have been nice if it was marked to give you an idea of how far the target would fly without you having to continue to tighten/loosen and wasting targets to get the desired throwing distance. I mention this because we use this unit to introduce 12 year olds to skeet/trap. We reduce the trowing distance and raise the height angle to "float" the target for a much better hit ratio to build confidence and tracking habits. Then when the kids are done the dads take over and you have to crank the spring tension way up to make it more realistic. It would be nice to have graduated marks on the bolt to give you a "ballpark" distance. This is the only reason I dropped it by 1 star.

This product right here is what brought me back into shooting clay pigeons. I bought this on Cyber Monday 2015. The discount brought the pricing down to a reasonable level, and the reviews were largely favorable. My old thrower was in need of replacement. It was not only old, but dangerous to use. The Champion EasyBird Auto-Feed serves true to its name. It's easy, and most importantly safe, to feed and use. We use a car battery we had in the shop to power the unit and a small wagon to move it around. It's a nice DIY contraption, but I know Champion makes an apparatus specifically for the transportation of the unit if that's your thing. Set up was not too difficult. It took about half an hour, and Champion included extra nuts, bolts, and screws. That was a very nice touch and reassuring as we were building this. Using it is very simple. Pin it into the ground, plug it into a source of power, turn it on, load it, and launch away. The quality construction, easy of use, easy set up, and reliability of this product makes me wholeheartedly recommend it to all.

Purchased the EasyBird Doubles, Oscillating Base and Taxi Trap cart. Shipped quickly and was assembled in no time. Took it right to the field where I shoot and my buddy and I had a blast. Unit needed absolutely zero adjustments. Loading the first clay pigeon is kinda tricky but after that's figured-out it's easy. I just don't let it go empty until I'm done for the day. I use an older auto battery and keep a small genius battery tender on it when not in use.

Setup was a breeze, but afterwards started off very lackluster. The launcher just didn't have any strength even at full spring tension. It would throw a single to about 30 yards at most. I also had problems with the arms resetting correctly, even after several adjustments to the travel switch.I finally contacted Champion, who said the wrong spring/bolt must have been packaged with the thrower (spring from the singles only thrower).They immediately sent out the appropriate spring/bolt, and I could immediately tell the difference both in appearance of the bolt (shoulder length) and the throw power. Since then, I don't have the problem with the arms resetting correctly, and clays go waaaay further. I did notice one arm throws harder than the other (can't remember which right now), so keep that in mind if you're throwing singles only.Now that the kinks are worked out, I'm loving this machine, and intend to add all of the extra goodies (ie, wobbler) soon. I purchased the trap thrower, oscillating base and trap taxi, took a couple of hours to put it all together but i am very pleased with the results. I have used it 3 times now and have not had any problems with it. about my only complaint is that its very heavy and I cant load it into my truck by my self.
