In my estimation the file is not thick; probably less than 1/10th inch thick. I find that the files work very well for manicurers and pedicures. I recommend them.

Do the files differ only in size?

Yes, they are all the same file - light file on one side and heavier on the other. My order did not offer the 3-way nail buffer.

How many coarse files are in the five set?

There's 5 files. One side is fine the other is course.

Do they come in their individual plastic sheath?

These do not. If you want the files from this (great, German) company, you have to purchase their better/more expensive ones. Those work even better than these. 3 Swords has several lines available, and the higher priced ones are NOT these same ones with a sheath but priced higher—they are a definite step up in quality. Don’t get me wrong—these work way better than almost all other files from other companies. Unfortunately, even the good-old-standbys, like Revlon, Sally’s, or Trim that I used exclusively starting in the 1970’s—the ones my Mother always used and I was a loyal customer of for more than three decades—have sadly gone the way of 100% corporate greed: maximize profits—to hell with quality (side note: it doesn’t matter where on the planet a product is manufactured; the materials, assembly, quality standards and quality control remains 100% under the control of the company which places the order—THEY are the ones who decide how “cheaply” the product is made and what the end product will be, or they do not/will not accept it!). I had (self) manicure tools from the old American standard companies that literally lasted me OVER 20 years—no joke!! All of the replacements I have tried from the U.S. companies over the past decade have been thoroughly disappointing and a waste of money. I would rather pay 4X as much to get a truly QUALITY product, which will last me 10, 15, 20 years, than buy the cheap xxxx they put out now, and have to WASTEFULLY replace them every 1-2 years! Well, I think I’ve made my point—rant over. Basically, the German made personal grooming products are the best in the world. One last note: as of this writing (12/22), there is only one picture in the reviews section, and it accompanies a negative review in which the reviewer complains that when attempting to bend this nail file in half—it bends. Yes! It absolutely DOES bend! However: it DOES NOT BREAK! (Yes, apply enough force and it will break. However, if in the course of normal filing of your nails your nails require so much lateral force during the “filing” as to break one of these files—you need to get yourself to a dermatologist, and quickly, as you most likely have a potentially serious and infectious problem (fungal, bacterial, etc) going on, and you need professional treatment. On the other hand, perhaps you might be better served purchasing a nail file that is much thicker, and will not “bend”.
