Powerful, long-lasting light from a stout, small, versatile device
SUBOOS Gen 2 Ultimate LED Rechargeable Tent Lantern and 5200mAh Power Bank This is a very bright, lightweight, versatile lighting device with impressive battery power and excellent 'build' quality. Its features and characteristics are explored below in some detail. Although this lantern was designed to light a tent (even a large one) very comfortably and is built to be water resistant enough to endure a rainstorm, it also can serve as an inexpensive and bright emergency substitute for house interior lighting during a multi-hour power outage. Unlike barrel-shaped lanterns built to be carried around, this was designed to be set or hung in place (but it can easily be carried around to provide light across large areas indoors or outside). Opening it unleashes surprising brightness. It uses 12 white and 3 red LEDs for 280 lumens on high (white light) and 100 lumens on medium (white light). This lantern apparently is Suboos 'Gen 2' version, so named because it uses a newer LED technology called 'Surface Mounted Devices' ('SMD') (LEDs), which allows it to produce more light from a smaller cluster of LEDs but with reduced battery consumption. Shipped with two 2,600 mAh batteries, the lantern's data sheet says that this power bank (5,200 mAh in total) will provide light on high for 7 hours and for 18 hours on medium. In red 'night vision' mode, the batteries reportedly power it for 100 hours or more. Details, capabilities, and features: To double-check the Suboos data sheet, I used a camera's internal light meter to do a rough side-by-side trial of this lantern against the Suboos Ultimate Lantern, which is rated at 180 lumens on its high setting. The light meter indicated this unit projected about 1.5 times more light on a wall when both devices were stationed at the same distance (about 48") from the wall. (And that's consistent with the data sheets for the two products, as 280 lumens at this device's high setting is ~55% more than 180 lumens for the other lantern on high.) After dark, wandering around the house carrying this lantern showed that it could adequately and comfortably illuminate even large rooms. The light cover is frosted, and so disseminates an even, non-glaring light. Suboos products, in our experience, reflect careful attention to design functionality and to quality construction, with stout casing materials and attention to weather protection. The manufacturer data sheet says this lantern meets water resistance IPX5 standards -- the industry standard for resisting a sustained low-pressure water jet spray, or, in other words, protected against that as well as dripping water, water splashes from any direction, and heavy rain). The dual rechargeable 18650 button-top batteries (2,600 mAh each) are delivered with a proper 'storage' charge (about 75% to 80% of full charge). Because these are wired into the lantern in parallel (not in series), the lantern can operate with only one battery installed (or in use) -- but having them in parallel makes the additional mAh available (for the full 5,200 mAh). With proper care, Lithium-ion 18650s can be recharged many, many times. These dual batteries also enable the lantern to serve as an emergency USB-device charging center. For that, the lantern includes a standard USB output port, located inside the weather-protected battery compartment. For devices that use a USB 'standard' to USB 'micro' cable for charging, the same cable that is used to charge the lantern (included with the lantern) can be used to charge their device. For those whose devices require other cables that terminate in a standard USB output port connector, any such cable can link to the lantern's charging port. (The lantern's batteries hold power sufficient to charge most smartphones with 2,000 - 3,000 mAh batteries fully at least once -- check your phone's battery mAh capacity to see how many full and partial charges the lantern could provide for it.) The multi-function switch cycles from 'off' through high and medium brightness, then to red mode, and then 'off', and it also serves as an LED-illuminated charging indicator, flashing while charging and turning solid red when the device is fully charged. When the lantern is being used as a power source to deliver USB power to an external device, the button glows blue. Weighing just under 9 ounces (with batteries installed), this unit is basically circular and relatively thin -- about 4.25" in diameter and about 2" in depth. The hanging ring is made of substantial metal, and 5 different 'click stops' for the ring allow the lantern to be angled to point straight down, or straight out to either side, or at a 45-degree angle to either side. Conclusion: Our household has included Suboos lighting devices for several years because of the consistent high quality of their products. This lantern appears to maintain that tradition. We purchased four of them -- two as donations for a local emergency shelter center (to replace antiquated massive and relatively dim battery-draining lanterns they had) and two for our own house, as emergency interior area backup lights for our regular mains-power interruptions (which occur in our area at least 3 or 4 times each year). The next time our house goes dark (and we know it will), we look forward to clicking these on immediately, confident that as a Suboos product they will work reliably, and that we will have good room lighting for many hours.

Field Geologist Recommended: Top Notch Lamp!
I'm a geology major who spends a lot of time living in tents. I've used plenty of lights over the years but this one is the best. It's so good that my fellow students were a bit envious, and one ordered one soon after seeing mine. She too is very pleased. It's very bright but can be dimmed by about 1/3 or 1/2. It also has a red light setting which allows you to light your tent without leaking excess light outside and annoying nearby campers trying to sleep. Although it is a bit wide for packing (about 4.5 inches), it folds fairly flat, and thus is smaller than most other lights I've used. A nice feature about the metal hanger is that it can let you point the light at multiple angles, and it can even serve as a stand on a table top (although the light would likely point up and into your face). The battery lasts quite a long time, but I've never timed it out. I got hours of use out of it over multiple nights, and don't think I was close to fully draining it. Additionally, it has held a charge for over 6 months. It can alo charge your cell phone via a USB cable port, and can be charged by a USB cable while you drive your car. I can say hands down that this is the best tent light I've ever used and would be happy to buy another one. I can't recommend it enough.

You can trust those positive reviews!
I think I’ve had this for about 2 years now, and Im writing this as Im buying my second one. My 1st one still works, I just want another! Hands down, this is my favorite rechargeable light, and I have more than a few. Its surprisingly feature rich, and makes it really versatile. I use this for all sorts of things. I’ll clip it to my belt loop if I’m working outside in the dark instead of wearing a head lamp. Tie it to some paracord and sling it over a tree branch when camping and illuminate a fairly large area, even at an 8-10 feet height! Clip it to my car’s hood and can see everything clearly without holding a flashlight. So many other uses. Don’t remember if the lumens are listed, but It is bright enough for any job, but with the frosted dome cover, it won’t blind you if glance at it. The hanging clip and carabiner is great, and can be put into 90/45/0 degree positions that really help if you can’t find that perfect hanging spot directly above you. The 3 light settings are nice and allow to budget for battery life if needed. Never had a battery problem running short or anything. The red light is handy as well, use that a lot Camping as well when the bright white would shine one neighboring campsites late at night. I could go on. Can’t speak highly enough about this light!!

Bright, adjustable, replaceable batteries
I'll begin with the bad, because there is really only one thing, but it does cost a star. The color tone is somewhat harsh. It is not high-CRI, and must be at least 6000K (probably 6500K). If you just need light, however, this is an excellent choice. Now for the good. It is very bright. Hung from a ceiling fixture, it's plenty to prepare a meal, eat the meal, play cards, or many other things. It uses not one but two 18650 cells in parallel (one by itself will work), giving it excellent battery life. Furthermore, because the batteries are replaceable, this light is not destined for the grabbage when the original ones can no longer hold a charge. It is reasonably sturdy. The plastic piece on the wire bail of my first one eventually cracked after a year or so, but it is a non-essential part. I bought a second one to give to a friend as a power-outage light. The original one lives in our bathroom, where it is an excellent night-light on its lowest setting (would last for weeks), that won't die in a power outage. This would be a five-star product if it had a warmer or neutral color tone, 4000K or even 5000K.

GREAT LITTLE LAMP
EDIT ON 3-6-24: I contacted the seller about the cord problem (mentioned in the review below). Their response was exceptional and came the day after I posted my review. A few days after this I received a package with the correct USB to USB C cord in it. The company rep said they will fix the cord problem in other packages that might have the non-fitting cords. Kudos to a good and responsive seller and I'm therefore adjusting my review and changing my review to 5 stars because it's a great little lamp. I'm using it to light up my closet, and it's fantastic for that purpose. This lantern came with a little USB cord. The end that should go into the lantern absolutely WILL NOT FIT into the lantern. I happened to have another cord (USB to USB C cord) that I had on hand to charge a headlamp I bought. The USB C end fit perfectly into the latter slot. I don't really know what the small end of this cord actually is, but it's not USB C. So if you would be depending on this lantern's supplied cord to charge it, don't buy this lantern. You would either need to buy the right cord or perhaps use one that you already have as I did. Otherwise, I can say it's small, lightweight, and puts out a bright light. I can't yet evaluate the length of time it will stay charged. I happen to be using it to illuminate a closet so I won't be leaving it on for long periods of time and with that kind of use, I don't expect it to run down quickly. If it does seem to run out too quickly with my limited usage in the closet, I'll update this review.

Bright tent light!
As a tent light, this is the best I’ve ever owned. It’s very bright, lasts a long time, and is simple to hang and use. I’ve taken it on multiple trips over the past year, including a 10-day trip where I never had to recharge it. (I only used it when needed, not for long continuous periods, and didn’t use it to charge other devices.) For camping, it’s reliable, practical, and exactly what you want in a tent light. Highly recommend!

Fantastic light for ice fishing
I have tried several different lights for ice fishing, and this is a keeper! I do a lot of ice fishing at night, and fish out of a few different shacks. This light provides ample coverage for both my one man filp-over and a two-man 6X6 hub on the low setting. On high, it provides good coverage for a three-man 8X8 hub. I never use the red light, but it is nice to have the option. I love that it has replaceable 18650 batteries, and on board charging (no need to carry extra disposable batteries, or another charger when traveling). You can power the light via the charging port, and the charging the device is very intuitive (unlike many other lights). I get very good run time on low even in extreme cold conditions. On high I obviously get less run time, but I carry a 20000mAh power bank with a USB extension cable, and have never been concerned that I was going to run out of power even on multiple day trips. With some Velcro strips, it is easy to mount the light on any type of tent pole, and the angle adjustment works very well. Great power options, long run time, two brightness settings, good throw & color, lightweight, small footprint, easy to mount, simple to operate, and simple to charge……….very satisfied with this purchase, and one immediately buy again if I ever lose the light down the hole. I have added some pic of the light in my one-man flip-over (on the low setting).

Great light
Super great value camping light. Decently bright even at the low setting. Lasts long on the included battery (replaceable) and easily charged with a USB charger. I use mine for camping and as a work light in the garage.
