Q: Can you add additional support to this if necessary?

It is incredibly sturdy, once it is completely assembled. I did think at one point that maybe I would push the back vertical legs against the wall and line them up with the studs behind the drywall so that I could basically mount the beframe to the wall for additional support. However, If you use all of the side rails provided, the bed frame is very sturdy and did not need any additional support. I did end up putting some drive screws into the rail that was at the head of the bed. My daughter ended up cracking the wood a bit when she would lean against it to read. I put drive screws in to make that particular rail much stronger and that seemed to do the trick. Make sure you are confident on which side you want the stair system to go on, once it is in it would be a major pain to switch sides.

Q: Can you make this a low loft bed?

You could cut the legs down, but the stairs would be a problem -- they are part of the frame.

Q: Did anyone use wood glue during assembly?

To use wood glue during assembly is not required
