Is distilled required to use this, or is it just an option?

I don’t believe it specifies. But, you should use distilled water in all steamers. If not you get corrosion, especially if you have hard water. This is a great steamer! Love it!! Great price!

Can other wands be attached to this?

Yes but I do not recommend purchasing this unit. Mine after only a couple of uses now shuts down on its own. Sometimes the steamer shuts down but the wand doesn’t even power up and it’s on it’s own separate cord

Does the timer make noise?

You can hear the FAINTEST ticking when the timer is counting down, but it doesn’t ding when the timer runs out, it just clicks off.
