Way Huge® Smalls™ Pork & Pickle™ Overdrive & Fuzz

Want that subtle grit drive? This does it well. Med gain drive sounds great. Russian muff? This is as good or better than a green Russian. And in one pedal. The drive was similar to another drive I have or I would have kept it. Now I wish I had. Miss the drive with fuzz/muff option. Will most likely get another one in near future.

They did a great job of cramming two excellent pedals into a smaller, bass friendly package. Makes your bass sound huge without losing your low end. I prefer the overdrive. Your tone will still sound warm, too.

After using a SA After Shock and a Alpha Omicron. I decided to try this pedal it’s more of what I was looking for, both in tone and ease of use.

SUMMARY It's ok. It's nice to have an overdrive and a fuzz in one package, but there are several things I did not like once I had the product in hand. The tones are pretty good, but seemed a bit brighter than I wanted at first. It's clearly boosting mids/highs or sort of reducing the lows. I don't hate that and on a board with other drives, it's an interesting option. It still passes low bass through better than the guitar overdrives I tried. I'm not a big fan though and since there are several other things I don't like, I'm likely to return it. I don't think it's a good value at $170, which is theoretically a 10% discount. If I'd loved the pedal, I'd have lived with the price but I don't so it's going back. PROS * Overdrive and Fuzz in one pedal * Decent tones if you like brighter bass tones * It passes the low end better than guitar fuzz pedals (and better than EHX Nano Bass Muff Pi) CONS *TONES - Initially I found the overdrive tones too bright. The fuzz I expect to be brighter but initially didn't love the tones I could get out of this pedal. However, side by side with EHX, I have to say I liked the fuzz of the pickle better. It had a presence and a fatter low end the EHX didn't. *FUZZ/OD CONTROL - I'd rather have a slightly larger form factor and put two foot switches so OD/Fuzz are foot switchable vs. the little mini-toggle. (On/Off, and Fuzz/Overdrive) *MICRO KNOBS - I really dislike the micro controls for clean tone/clean blend. I also don't think they work very well. Their impact on the sound is minimal by comparison to other bass overdrive pedals I have with similar controls. * PRICE - kind of high for what it is, even at the $170 discounted price. * BOTTOM MOUNT SURFACE - Screws on bottom are not great if you use velcro to attach. They should use flathead countersunk screws and provide the rubber feet and screws with the same thread for those who use the rubber feet. These screws are roundheads and the panel is not countersunk so you have 4 bumps that interfere a little with velcro mounting. * IN/OUT JACKS - Location of input/output jacks on the back vertical panel is awkward. Put them on the sides and keep the power on the back where it belongs. AGNOSTIC/MEH - The battery box on the front. I don't use batteries so it's not that important to me. It's better than putting that on the bottom where it would interfere with mounting. I guess. There are better ways. I like TC electronic's approach to the back surface best, followed by MXR and EHX. Boss's approach to the battery is great but I don't love their controls and I hate the rubber backs with stickers all over them - terrible for velcro mounting. So....MEH on the front battery box. In fairness several of these things are apparent "pre-purchase", and I'd have lived with them if I otherwise liked the tones and the functionality of the controls, but I didn't, so it's going back. PREFERENCES: * On overdrive, I like the MXR M89 better than anything else I've tried, although I'm still exploring. And, I got my MXR for $115 from stewmac brand new but on clearance. Check it out while you can. (normally $149 most places). * On Fuzz - I like the EHX Bass Big Muff Pi, and while they make 3 modesl, what I would really like from them is a Nano model with a wet/dry blend knob. Instead, they offer it with the dry switch which blends wet/dry at fixed 50/50 mix. Probably "ok" but I'd like more control. Their mid size version has two outputs, wet and dry, so if you were bi-amping could give that control but I'm not. Their large deluxe version has the blend knob the other two should have. But the one I got sucked and the output was weak compared to the midsize one I tried. I ended up trying the nano and I like it a lot, but it was less "present" than the pickle, and it wasn't just a treble thing. Looking at the MXR Bass fuzz, but it lacks an overall volume/level control instead offering separate wet/dry knobs...seems like it would be a pain to set it to unity volume with the off condition. So while I can't find exactly what I want, the EHX Nano Bass Muff Pi is the closest and at $90, a much better value. In video comparisons I like it's tone best. I had another version of this and I liked the basic sounds it produced, so I've ordered the Nano and I hope it will serve my purpose. Update - I like the nano, but I like the sound of the pickle better. Still for $90 vs $170...it's a minor difference. I need to play both more. But I upgraded the pork and pickle from 3 to 4 after side by side with EHX. I may try the MXR and see how it does.

Truthfully this kinda changed the game for me. I use the pork and pickle both in fuzz form and overdrive. I am using this with the orange little bass thing, 2 4x10 swr cabs, and an ampeg ba115. This thing really gives superior overdrive and fuzz to anything out there on the market currently for bass.
