Mechanical Pencil Lead, Ain Stein, 0.5mm, 3B (C275-3B)

Mechanical pencil leads in a hardness of 4B is difficult to find in general. The AIN Stein leads are high quality 4B leads. They work well, they feed well, and they leave a dark line with little to no pressure. When you're dealing with mechanical pencils in the 0.5mm range it can be easy to break leads. 4B leads allow you to write with a much softer touch and leave the same darkness of line; this is kind of counterintuitive for some. The notion of a softer lead just breaking easier isn't necessarily always the case because less overall pressure is required to write. I've pretty much switched out all of my mechanical pencils (and I have a LOT) to 4B or 3B. I just wish the 4B grade was offered for the 0.3mm leads (only 2B is available). Lastly, just remember, 4B is (6) grades of lead softer than 2H (the most common type of pencil lead). I strongly recommend any mechanical pencil lover to try these AIN Stein leads out. You won't regret it.

Let me preface this review by telling you: I am easily amused. You may not be. This product is hard to find, and I was delighted that Amazon carried it. I was NOT so delighted when the estimated shipping time was 3 to 6 weeks. "Where's this coming from, the MOON?" No. Hong Kong. The product arrived in just over a week, in a nice stiff brown paper envelope that was covered with air mail stickers (English, French and, presumably, Mandarin) and declaration for Hong Kong customs. I was tickled. I haven't received anything so very foreign-looking in the mail for ages, and to get a tube of pencil lead this way..! The leads are fine, too: very soft and dark, just the way I like them. They seem to be very strong, as well. I've since found a place were you can get this product shipped a little bit faster--but your leads won't clear Hong Kong customs.

I am collecting this for a future sale in 10 years. I used them before and they are worth keeping until then to resell them as NOS.

This is an amazing lead. it is dark, soft and leaves a great texture. Due to softness, it runs out pretty fast but it does a great job. I use HB mechanical pencil for my drawing and wanted something dark for drawing hair/shadows, this is just perfect. I don't like to carry the set of pencils from 4H to 4B. I like to keep it simple, one HB mechanical pencil and one 4B mechanical pencil. This is a perfect choice for all the minimalists like me.

There were no directions and I could not get it opened, I finally broke the top and then figured out how I should have opened it. I wish there were some directions on it. Now I have tape holding the lead in. On another note, the lead is fine.

This is my new favorite, edging out my 0.7mm 2B. A drawn line is ever so slightly darker than the 2B, even with the narrower lead. On mixed media paper the amount of scratchy resistance is in the good range for me as a left handed person. Bring a softer lead it is a tad more fluid than the HB but it’s not distracting. My script is still neat. No issues with breakage and no smudging to speak of. I only write I do not draw. I like it.

Finally the perfect lead for me! I tried another brand of 0.5/ 4B lead and it was more like a 4HB. So, I am buying this brand again.

It is getting harder to find hard pencil leads. these are great for technical drawings.

These pencil leads are quite nice. A little pricey, but you absolutely get what you pay for. Creamy smooth writing feel, and they definitely don't break as easily as less expensive leads. These are for sure my new favourite for my P205's.

Even though I also like to write with 0.5 2B (B is too hard), which already means I'm a fan of the softer side, having found Pentel Ain Stein 0.5 4B leads was a dream come true. I know they are great for nuances - light or dramatic - in drawing, but writing is definitely why I use mechanical pencils, so bear in mind that this review is from someone who mainly writes (taking notes in class, making notes, solving exercises, eventually drawing graphics, journaling, ...). They are smooth to the point of turning writing into a gentle high velocity (if this makes and sense), as we so need on uni classes. The trace is easy to erase and it never ever scratches paper. Even in Bible paper, which is uncoated and ultra-thin - which says it all. Writing with these leads it's like floating on paper to the pace we decide. Writing with Pentel Ain Stein 0.5 4B leads is simply a pleasure. They turn the tiredness of a long writing session into something less tiring to fingers and wrists, thus, more enjoyable and more focused. I use them with Pentel Graphgear 1000 and Pilot Dr Grip. Although PentelG1000 has the ideal (imo) lead sleeve because it's long and prevents breakage, Pilot Dr Grip (Play Border and Pilot Dr. Grip HDGL-50R have no such long sleeve and, yet, they don't break the leads. However, they easily break with Rotring Tikki and classic Pentels (sorry, Pentel, love Pentel, your classics, but your wonder 0.5 4B demands a more refined Pentel...). At least, that's my experience. I Believe it's pointless to use these leads with Kuru Toga mech pencils, because if you're on the softer side, you don't want the lead to be sharp all the time. The tube is easy to work with and there's no danger of Breaking a lead while taking it out. The packaging could be more proper to the size of the tubes, but, at least, it arrived in the expected time.
