Q: from what I am reading here, you need a converter box in order for this to work? I want for a spare room just for local stuff. What do I need to add?

No converter box needed. But I did find that I needed to have it in your window to get more channels. It was quite flimsy and one of the antennas can depart immediately after I opened it. I only tried it once but it did get decent enough Channels.

Q: What is the range of this antenna?

15-25 miles. For best results be sure antenna is mounted on a wall shelf at least 5 feet off the ground by a window.

Q: which it is the function?

Your question don't make sense. Can you ask it in another way? I will say that for a really cheap antenna it is better than an RCA antenna that I spent $59.99 for that I will be returning. Chris Q
