Kelis Was Here - 4.5 stars
Listening to this disc makes me sad that Kelis isn't embraced more fully by the US but I guess as a fan, knowing that she is appreciated overseas for being a dynamic risk taker, has to be enough! This is another excellent offering by an artist who knows exactly who she is both as a woman and a vocalist - Kelis never veers from "her lane" yet manages to produce uniquely cohesive albums.Releasing BOSSY as the lead single was pure genius! I loved it from the jump but it was so great watching friends who initially hated the track fall under the spell of the song last summer.WHAT'S THAT RIGHT THERE - a catchy track using Parliment's KNEE DEEP sample while Kelis partly raps & partly sings. Listening to it though, I wonder if it would've been a big hit if either Fergie or Gwen Stafanie was the artist behind the song....TILL THE WHEELS FALL OFF - another fave, reminds me of something Prince would've produced in his heydeyLIVING PROOF - melodic track on which Kelis' smoky vocals sound greatBLINDFOLD ME - although this track has a great beat (along with a HOT video by the newlyweds) I thought it was a really risky choice as the 2nd single and killed the momentum built up by BOSSYGOODBYES - I love the beats on this track and as I listened to it over & over, something about it reminds me of something Lenny Kravitz would sing (now wouldn't that be a great duet!?!)APPRECIATE ME - a very dramatic anthemic song that builds and again features Kelis' trademark throaty vocalsHAVE A NICE DAY - this track turns into a really fun listen once you get to the "carnivale" breakdownTRILOGY, WEEKEND & CIRCUS - all feature great catchy beats but the strong lyrics of CIRCUS presenting a commentary about today's music industry make it another faveMy favorite track 2nd to BOSSY is the gorgeous LIL STAR - why oh why wasn't this released as the 2nd single??? I think it would've been a hit and it definitely would've piqued the interest of those who only think of Kelis in passing (it's truly a hidden gem much like MILLIONAIRE was on her TASTY album).I'm so glad that in the face of what the music industry has become, Kelis continues to "go left" and do her own thing while still putting out excellent music. I was surprised that the Neptunes didn't work on even one track but this did not lead to a drop off in the quality of the music. Fans won't be disappointed and neither will those who are just discovering Kelis - this ecclectic collection will keep music lovers smiling for days.

Unique Flavor
Kelis is not your average r&b singer. As a matter of fact, you can't exactly label her music. It's soulful, funky, and...I don't know, Refreshing. Her music doesn't sound like she's trying to get a cookie cutter radio hit. The girl is doing what she loves, and being creative. It works very well. You feel her personality in every song. It's one of those albums that you can go back and listen to repeatedly. It has great "mood" songs. The only problem that I have is the direction of the album. They seem to be picking the weaker songs as singles. "Bossy" is fun and cute, but why follow it up with the harsh, gimmicky "Blindfold Me?" Kelis has a number of very interesting songs that showcase her talents a lot better:1. Living Proof2. Goodbyes3. Trilogy4. Like You5. CircusIf you're bored with the cookie cutter sound of R&B, are tired of desperate, over-exposed hit-seekers (Beyonce), you should definitely buy this album.

Good change from the Neptunes sound
Finally a CD without the Neptunes. I enjoyed Kaleidoscope and Tasty, but wanted to hear what other producers would do with her. Kelis Was Here isn't her best, but definitely worth picking up, especially for fans of her style.I think she did a great job without the Neptunes, proving that she didn't need to totally rely on them.Fave tracks:GoodbyesTrilogyLiving ProofLike You - love the sample from Mozart!Appreciate Me - VERY soulful even though vocals aren't the greatest hereHonorable mention:Blindfold Me - guilty pleasure :-)

SEVERAL CLASSICS ON THIS JOINT
First, Bossy is my joint. Cuz im a BOSS. "AW Sh$t" she can make a whole song talk Sh$t. Ce-Lo (trk #13, "Im a Star") is always appreciated on any track compilation, always some introspective type vibe giving inpiration. I love it (not a party song though). But then theres "WEEKEND". Im playing that joint on Monday to get me through til Friday. Ya heard!. "BLINDFOLD ME", hmmm now that's an idea, pretty sexy song. And the "CIRCUS" brings it full circle for me explaining her perception of the 'entertainment industry' and expectations of entertainers. KELIS continues to impress me. Big UPPS, to Kelis.

Kelis gives us another great one!
I am a Kelis fan, I loved the previous album and this one is even better!(And different, I might add) She is a seamless concoction of soul/funk/rock and even gives a little salsa at the end of the album. It is a must-have!

Kelis the trendsetter
funky type of songs that are cute and get stuck in your head. She cannot really sing and some of the songs are not that good. Yet the songs she puts on the radio are cute songs that are fun to dance to and are just anthems nothing more than just that.

Love Kelis.
Album was good, but I'm not going to lie out of all her albums I played this one less.

One of a kind
This album shows that despite this being Kelis's fourth album, she is just as innovative and multi-dimensional as when she first came out with Kaleidoscope.Every track on here is good (although I do have a couple of favourites e.g Trilogy, Lil Star, Goodbyes to name a couple) so you won't be disappointed.Overall, she's one of my fave artists - good singer, great songs, love her style.....the list goes on. In my opinion, there isn't anyone around right now who is anything like her.So if you haven't got this CD or any of her other previous ones and you like RnB then I suggest you go buy them! Right now!!Unless of course if you prefer the same old formularised, predictable RnB that most people have come to expect nowadays.....

Great album!
Since 1999 when i first heard hate you right now on the radio i loved kelis and her music, and i have most of her cds,she has a certain sound and with the neptunes production its quite laid back but edgy especially where some of her lyrics are concerned,eg milkshake, flashback, blindfold me etc.Great album!

Not just a GORGEOUS face
So you might recall the mega hit Milkshake off the Tasty album and it was in my opinion still is a mega hit. Kelis is so much more than this track alone; from the debut album Kaleidoscope with what tantalized my ear drums initially in 'Caught Out There' and after purchasing the album I found so much more, being wicked beats, smooth lyrics and vocals; a remarkably talented young woman producing a very appealing variety of music. In Kelis Was Here, I've found the continuation of this exploration into her artistic abilities; I thoroughly enjoy grooving and doing my best to sing along with her exceptional vocal ability. Needless to say, I've already ordered and am waiting on Kelis' fifth installment of her six albums to date and know I'm going to purchase the smooth sounds of Food the sixth; I am very much looking forward to listening to Kelis at the best possible bitrate.Respectfully,Very Satisfied Repeat Australian listener of Kelis Rogers and Amazon CustomerKelis (Kelis Rogers) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Amazon ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐RarewavesUK ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Aww! Yeah...
"Kelis was here" war der Grund, warum Kelis von LaFace/Jive und Virgin rausflog, weil die Verkaufszahlen sehr nidrig waren, aber ich kann das nicht verstehen, weil Kelis was here ein sehr gelungenes Album ist! Es hat von Alternative Hip Hop (mit welchem sie sich auf "Kaleidoscope" presäntierte), R&B, Hip Hop, Pop sowie Competary R&B Balladen... Alles was man braucht!Trotz allem ist Kelis was here ein Album, welches für Hip Hop-Liebhaber ein "Muss" ist!Die Highlights sind "Blindfold Me", "Aww Sh*t", "Bossy", "Weekend", "Triology", "Lil Star", "Living Proof", "Fire" und "Circus"
