Centuries after the people of Earth master interstellar travel, humanity is thriving across the galaxy. The colonists of the 15th Solar System live in harmony with the natives, fostering lives of peace and simple beauty. But this all changes when the Gavanas Empire arrives, as the merciless despot Roxair XIII quickly conquers the 15th Solar System and enslaves all life there to his cause! Leading the fight against the Gavanas are a scrappy band of rebels: wide-eyed rookie pilot Hayato Gen, cynical veteran Ryu, and steady ally Balu. Didn’t like it
I love classic tokusatsu series like Ultraman and Kamen Rider, but Message From Space TV series was not very good.

Japanese Star Wars - the Series! For Jedi, Read Ninjas!
Imagine another world where George Lucas had decided to follow up Star Wars with a TV series in which Luke Skywalker travelled around with Han Solo and Chewie in the Millennium Falcon, accompanied by the droids, fighting the Galactic Empire, helped by Princess Leia in her own mysterious ship. But actually it didn't happen in another world, but in another country!The 1978 film 'Message From Space,' the most expensive film made in Japan at the time, has been described as "Japanese Star Wars," but it is this sequel series that really picks up on Star Wars plot ideas. Set a generation after the events of the film, in a solar system colonized by humans that is also the home to an intelligent ape-like race. The Gavanas Empire (now a race of ordinary humanoids and not the metal-skinned beings of the film) invade, easily destroying the system's defence force, and enslave the people. Hayato Gen (played by a young Hiroyuki Sanada), a young space cadet, survives, travelling on a tramp freighter with cynical Ryu and his co-pilot ape-man Ballou. Hayato's father is murdered by the Gavanas before he can communicate a secret to his son, and the mysterious Princess Sofia in her space sailing-ship saves the young man's life, giving him a mysterious ship - the Liabe from the movie. Together with Ryu and Ballou, and joined by the robot Tonto, they must fight the stormtroopers and ninjas of the Gavanas, and foil the evil plans of the mysterious Emperor Rokseia. Thankfully Ryu is in fact secretly a ninja himself - and so is Hayato!Message from Space: Galactic Wars is a classic Tokosatsu series that draws heavily on Star Wars, but with secret ninjas rather than Jedi, and a man in a gorilla suit in the Chewbacca role. It reuses models, costumes, and even some effects footage, from the film, but no prior knowledge of the film is needed. It's a fun romp, with a running plotline (who is Rokseia, and what is the Emperor trying to do?) and lots of action - at least one fight scene per episode, and the episode special villain explodes spectacularly when defeated.Plot is one important pasrt of a film, but casting is key, and 'Galactic Wars' has a top-notch cast. Of course the name that is most recognisable in the cast is the lead, the legendary Hiroyuki Sanada, returning from the film, but playing a completely different character, the show's version of Luke Skywalker. Shinzô Hotta is so goloriously over the top as the Gavanas commander Korgar (effectively the Darth Vader character) that no piece of scenery is left unchewed. Yoko Akitani gives a top-notch performance as the mysterious Princess Sofia, and Akira Oda is perfect in his role as the cynical yet heroic Ryu.It is unashamedly 'Japanese Star Wars: The Series,' but it's not a cynical rip-off, rather an exciting and well-done series that takes the tropes of Star Wars and tells its own story of plucky rebels against a Galactic Empire, while never taking itself entirely seriously.

Excellent Japanese cult action TV show
Hiroyuki Sanada is brilliant in this, a must own Blu-ray for fans of Hiroyuki Sanada and/or Tokusatsu (special effects live action) TV shows alike. I have been a fan ofHiroyuki Sanada since I watched him in classics like "Roaring Fire" and "Shogun's Ninja" to name just two. Highly recommended.

san ku kaiでもごぞんじの銀河大戦です(^-^)/やはりDVDよりも遥かに画質は上でした。どうしてもずっと気になっていてやっと購入。これは内容も上質のドラマですね。驚いたんですがプログラミングは当時、パソコンやゲームマシンを作ってたコモドールの日本法人、コモドールジャパンがオープニングのクレジットに記載されています。STAR WARSのマネとか揶揄されていますがこういう事実を知ると作り手の熱の入り方が40年の時を越えて見えてきます。本当にBlu-ray版を購入して良かったと思います(^-^)/確かこの後に宇宙刑事ギャバンとかの宇宙刑事シリーズが登場したと記憶しています。この作品は大人のドラマ作品ですね(^-^)/中学生くらいで敢えて話が分かるくらいになってたようです。宇宙からのメッセージと言うより石ノ森章太郎先生のメッセージのように僕には感じました。今の時代背景にダブるんです。あ、ロボコンのロビンちゃんも出てます(^^;
