How to Survive Your First Trip in the Wild: Backpacking for Beginners

highly recommended intro to backpacking
This is an excellent resource for anyone who wants to try backpacking. Reading it and following the author's no nonsense advice will make it a more pleasant and easier experience. I've introduced many Boy Scouts, friends and family members to backpacking and whole heartedly recommend this book! I especially liked the checklists and the collection of places to backpack in each state.

An excellent primer
A good base for beginners. I am not certain why the Catskills were preferred over the Adirondacks for beginners. I began hiking the Adirondacks as a twelve year old adolescent. I found them to be stunning.

Perfect Starter
I think this is going to be incredibly helpful for my first backpacking trip. It was very easy to read and has a lot of basic info that you might not find else where. It also has great suggestions about where to start hiking at what time of year and where to find more info.

A decent primer.
The writing is basic as is the advice. I would have added a section on personal protection. Not everyone on the trail is friendly.

Good for Newbies
I like that this book is small enough to throw in your backpack to take with you. Obviously you will need this book BEFORE you hit the trail, but that's because there are some great lists on what NOT to forget to pack. There is also a great section on planning your trip, from campsites, time of year, trails and more - there is some good info in there that may seem like common sense to the experience camper, but is very invaluable to the newbie. Other sections in this small little guide include:setting up camp, hitting the trail, basic first aid, checklists, resources, and even some trip recommendations for each state! Honestly, it's worth the price getting this bad boy. Don't make a mistake and end up dying in the woods. Take the book and be prepared!

The handbook for backpacking
Disclosure: I was provided a free copy for review by the publisher. (Thank you.)It used to be that a lot of graduates from Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts knew about camping and backpacking. Some went into the military and learned more about camping. But the Scouts aren't what they used to be, and many quit backpacking after a career in the service. So a lot of people never really learned how to camp and backpack, and had no one to teach them. This book is for you.Paul Magnanti's pocket-sized handbook that offers advice to those who would like to go backpacking but are clueless. With advice on planning, gear, camping, and cooking, as well as tips and advice for first-timers, it's a great primer for those who have no idea what to do.There are also sections on first aid, a state-by-state list of great places for first timers, "camp life" including hygiene, seasonal packing lists, and a checklist for first-timers. Cooking and other necessities are also discussed. He also offers advice on cleaning and storing your gear to keep it ready to use whenever you're of a mind to go.If you've considered going camping and backpacking but have no idea how to start, this book is a must-read.
