Why is there no cover over the water? That is unsanitary.

There is no cover over the water while you are actively using the water pick. However, when not in use, the water reservoir is upside down as a cover. I use a paper towel to dry the inside and everything is covered and remains protected. It is a good unit and I have been very happy with it.
