Good Device for Chalk Use
Look and function exactly as ones my husband had for use in his classroom before retirement. Daughter has a classroom with whiteboards but also one old school chalkboard she wants to use. These definitely help with keeping a grip and cleaner hands when your stick gets shorter. Easy to use, even second graders. Hold standard size chalk sticks, only.

Simple, inexpensive, and functional
I bought this because I like carrying a piece of chalk with me when I'm working on stuff. Chalk is great for making marks on surfaces like wood, steel plate, etc. It's also cheap, and usually easier to find than soapstone or paint markers (which always seem to dry out on me). I like carrying chalk but I hate fishing broken bits of chalk out of my pocket when I inevitably bump into something. These holders were actually cheaper to buy than a single holder of a different design. The reviews were mixed but for the price I decided to risk it. I'm glad I did. So far all I've done is to load chalk in them, but they feel solid and hold the chalk very securely. Pressing on the top of the holder causes the fingers that hold the stick of chalk to loosen so that you can feed some more out or load in a fresh piece. If you've ever used a mechanical pencil, the mechanism is similar. I'm not in love with the anodizing on the holders-- the colors look a little washed out to me-- but let's be honest here: For the price, these are an absolute bargain. They're thicker than a Sharpie but shorter, and they drop into a pocket pretty unobtrusively. The build quality looks good so I'm hoping they stand up to a little garage work. Time will tell.

No directions but fine
Sometimes the chalk goes all the way back in and it's sort of hard to get it out again cause you can't grip it. I just stick a razor into it and pull in out. But it's a fine thing.

So happy I found these.
They are perfect! I bought them for my dad. He's an upholsterer and uses chalk to trace fabric templates. Chalk dries his hands a lot. He used to have chalk holders like these many yrs ago but lost them and the company where he bought them; don't sell them anymore. I'm glad I found them on Amazon..... They work pretty good. I tested them with school chalk. They grab the chalk pretty good. Can't wait to give them to my Dad โบ๏ธ

Faulty product.
Does not hold chalk in place. Chalk continually breaks and when I apply pressure (that is, to write on a board) the chalk either breaks or sinks back into the holder making the produce unusable.

It's just ok
I have a couple of small blackboards at home for memos, and I've always just held the chalk by hand. But then I remembered how my teachers used to use a thingamajig to hold the chalk to avoid getting their fingers dusty and decided that I should aspire to have non-dusty fingers, too. So I searched a lot on Amazon, and TBH most of what I found just appeared to be the same. These chalk holders are skinnier than what I remember my teachers using. Those seemed wider and heftier. But this is what I ultimately decided to order. One of the holders works just fine, holding the chalk securely in place without issue. The other one is not so great. The chalk fits very loosely in it and moves unless i pull the chalk nearly all the way out, then it fits. Not sure why that would even be a thing, but I tested the chalk by swapping it with the other holder and other chalk; just seems to be the holder. I'm not returning it though because I can tolerate it given the very little writing I do with chalk.

Simple is great!
This is a simple, light-weight, easy to use chalk chuck. There's not much to the mechanism - just two tubes (one inside another) with a spring in between them. The inner tube has the jaws that hold the chalk, which expand when the back is pushed. This simplicity of design ensures that there's not much that could go wrong with the chuck. It accommodates an entire piece of chalk with a little room to spare on the inside (i.e. when the chalk is fully retracted, it doesn't come into contact with anything on the outside). If you push the back and hold the chuck vertically with the tip pointing down, the chalk slides out (the chalk slides out under gravity; you have to be careful or it will fall out and break). Likewise, if you push the back and hold it vertically with the tip pointing up, the chalk retracts under gravity. It holds even the tiniest pieces of chalk with absolute firmness. I used a 1/8th inch piece of chalk on this thing until the jaws were touching the board! Absolutely no wastage! The only downside is that if you're not using chalk of the diameter that this chuck was designed for, it's totally useless (the simplicity doesn't ensure room for fiddling and making various chalk sizes fit). Very elegant, very simple, not expensive at all! What more can a teacher ask for? Go for it... this one's bang on the buck! Edit: Forgot to mention; this one's meant for a 9mm diameter chalk. I think (although I'm not sure) that there are various products being sold under different names (like Charles Leonard, School Smart etc.) but they're all actually identical to this one in appearance.

Just as pictured
Just as pictured and just what I was looking for! Personally I'm using this as a prop for a costume and not for it's intended purpose so I can't vouch for it's ability to hold chalk but I'm happy with it.
