Used Every Day, Works Like a Champ -- Great Value
I bought this as a gift. When I got it, it had a dead pixel and I exchanged it through Amazon. I was a little wary since I don't buy electronics through amazon very often -- but the Portable DVD has been worth its weight in gold.I have not had any problems with the replacement DVD player I got. We watch it every night and often leave it on overnight. It plays like a champ. The picture is clear, and as long as the volume is on low, the sound is very clear (the sound gets a little tinny at louder volumes). I have not seen it skip once even when jostled.A portable DVD player comes in surprisingly handy. It is very lightwieght and fits easily inside a laptop bag. Great for work, home, kitchen, bedroom, -- basically everywhere you either dont have a TV or dont want all the light and noise of a full-size TV.I can reccomend this portable DVD player to anyone who enjoys movies or tv shows and is not interested in downloads.

Good and Basic...sometimes retro.
I bought this player from Amazon. first one bought in the portable category; well within my disposition of spending money on this item solely for my two-year old, who was taking over our main tv with her videos; also for traveling purposes. It was a good idea to purchase such a player and the child really loved it.Pros:good picture qualityportabledecent battery life.cons: things I found annoying:the power switch is really hard to move to position. You must use your nail to turn off/onthe DVD door is flimsy, very thin plastic. When you open de DVD door, most of the time the disk is still gyrating quite fast. you must stop it.No R/CCharging only happens when the player is off.The worst: the presence of a volume dial instead of buttons for this function; its hard to find and operate...this is totally retro.nevermind the rest...recently it fell and the screen shattered rendering the artifact useless...UPDATE::: I have used this broken screen dvd for 3 years now conected a TV and works well like this!!!

Good product
I bought these for myself and my mother to use to watch courses from the Learning Company and for that purpose they work just great. There is a model that also has digital TV included and had I known of that before buying this would likely have gone that route. I also have a piano course that includes a CD and this lets me take it to the piano and listen to the CD (which shows me how a piece of music should sound if playing properly) and works great for that purpose. When I do not want to watch a DVD on my full screen or when traveling this works extremely well. Only drawback is that it does not have a way of seeing how far you are into a DVD which would have been a nice feature and one that most DVD players have. For the price I think this is hard to beat.

Movies are better with popcorn... uh, caviar.
This is a basic, no frills, no gimmicks unit with no remote control. It's small, tight and durable. The on/off switch is a little balky but not a problem. The switch to open the disk compartment is overly sensitive, so it's possible to open (and stop) the player unintentionally when handling it.But here's the thing: There's not much that can go wrong with this strong little unit. And you don't need a remote controller, anyway, since your unit will be within reach while your're watching it. That is, you already have a well-engineered remote control on the end of you arm. Use your fingers to press the buttons on the player instead of on the remote... same effort, same result. And there you have it. The Philips PET741B/37 is a good, simple DVD player.Final point, if the picture seems small, move closer. A 48" wide screen at fourteen feet distance is actually smaller in your field of view than this 7" machine is sitting on your chest when you're lying in bed.

Can't Watch While Charging
Just received this item and had read conflicting messages in Amazon reviews about whether you can watch this while it's charging. Well, the verdict is: you can't. And much to my disappointment. Instructions say in black and white (but nowhere in the promotional materials online before buying) that you can't use this while it's charging and it takes 4.5 hours to charge. So our road trip with our kid will involve no more than 2 hours of watching his DVDs, 4.5 hours of charging his player... really? What good is that? I might have to return this pronto. What I'd be interested to know: can you actually charge it and watch at the same time, but it's not advisable (instead of not doable)? If it's simply not advisable, then I'll do it anyway... thoughts on this from anyone else who has purchased this DVD player?

Great for the price
We bought two of these for our 9 year old twin's birthdays. They have had them for several weeks now and use them 3-5 times a week. So far the dvd players have held up great. The picture and sound quality is much better than i expected considering the price. It also seems very sturdy and has held up to repeated 9 year old (as well as 7 and 5 year old sibling) use. There are not a lot of bells and whistles, but if you are looking for a simple, good quality, inexpensive portable player i would definitely recommend this one.

Phillip's portable DVD Review
In comparison with a portable Sony DVD purchase I recently made for my other child, there is no comparison. One of the options that is missing in this rating is video quality and the Sony is far better in video, sound, battery life and the quality of material used. However, the Phillips is a cheaper product and does the job, although I am a bit concerned because it rattles a bit and sounds like it is about to go out. Love the Sony...

Affordable and functional-just wish you could charge while it's in use.
This player is all one needs in a portable DVD player. Only one thing is frustrating-it has to be off to charge it so that's a few hours spent without it.
