Beat drill driver and impact driver for the money!

Hello there tool shopper,This drill and impact driver combo set replaces my aging Makita 6914D 12V impact driver. I bought that tool in 2003 and it has been nothing but reliable and until now was by far the most used tool I own. This year the batteries' working time is down to 10 or 15 minutes making the tool usable but annoying with the constant battery swapping. I shopped around and after looking through new Bosch, Makita, Milwaukee, Hitachi and Rigid I settled on this Bosch combo kit.I'm impressed by the compact size and substantial power of these tiny Bosch drivers. The impact driver advertises slightly higher RPMs and torque than my old Makita and is substantially smaller and lighter. By comparison the body and battery profile of the 6914D looks and feels like the new 18v drivers and is much bigger than this pair of 12v Bosch drivers. I always thought of my Makita unit as small and maneuverable; it's the only drill driver unit I ever used on a job or around the house. It was much much smaller than drills of its time and until now I never saw it as larger compared to other tools. Man, these two are shorter in height and length by sever inches. Any smaller and you couldn’t call it hand held because you couldn’t close your fingers around the handle!I thought about buying just an impact driver, however the price for the driver and batteries was so close to the price of the one tool kit it was worth it to me to have the drill around even if it won't get much use. I already have a removable chuck so not having one built into the drill is preferable for me. I can attach the chuck to either tool as needed and not bring a second tool along if it suits to just pack one for a job. There are times when the banging of the hammer and anvil in the impact driver was a bit much, mostly working in tight closed spaces like basements or outside where I could be bothering the neighbors. It will be nice to have a drill for times like that if the extra torque isn’t required. So, why not?The tools are remarkably small and feel very balanced in the hand. They both spin true and I like the rubber grip and bumpers on the sides of the tools. I can lay them any which way and not worry about beating up what I just laid them on. They will balance standing up on the battery pack like my old Makita but I would not suggest it on the job. I mention it b/c that is just how they feel when you hold them, nice and balanced. I lay mine on their side when working.You are probably wondering “Why not get the bigger 18v tools?” For me it is because only once in 12 years was I not able to drive what I trying to drive w 12v. I sistered a dozen 2x10's with glue and dozens of 4" #10 Spax and the Makita never missed a beat, even with the aging batteries. This includes using it to take the wheels off the car for brake jobs over the years. The only thing I couldn't drive with the old 12v was an 6" lag into an old treated 4x4. I seated it with a wrench and that was that. I should have prevailed the hole, but I didn't and it still worked out fine. The impact driver in this kit is advertised a little more torque than my old tool so unless manufacturer’s figured out how to fudge their specs last week I’m betting this one will do the same job as the last if not a little better. So far that’s been true for me, and from what I read in other reviews it’s been true for other builders too.For me 12v is plenty, so I spent the extra money on another tool (the reciprocating saw) instead of investing it in extra power for the odd times I might want it. If I’m driving big lags and I have trouble with the last inch I don’t mind getting out a wrench to finish them off. Call me cheap but those 18v batteries cost quite a bit more to replace. I like the no-memory Li-Ion batteries but I’ve had enough laptops to know they only have so many charge cycles and they last just about as long as the warranty. I’m betting on replacing them or buying an extra before I trade up tools so 12v feels like the way to go.Just about any tool from the big names will do the job you ask of it so I suggest you get the tool(s) you like using. You’re going to be looking at it a lot, if you don’t like looking at it you should at least be indifferent towards it. Why own a tool you don’t use, and why use a tool you don’t like? I like things that make my work easier and don’t cost a fortune, and I like these tools quite a lot. For me these are great to look at and have the combination of power and features that suit my needs.Happy tool hunting.

Love these tools. Great product and faster than expected delivery

PS21The basic drill-driver is a handy size and is designed well for tasks involved in installing and removing screws and other fastners. While there are drill bits that fit this kind of driver, it does not have a proper drill chuck and thus cannot be expected to hold them perfectly straight for pinpointing where you want to drill a hole; moreover, adding a chuck won't help for the same reason. The whole reason for not having a chuck is to speed the process of changing driver bits, and that's where it excels.The adjustable speed, ease of changing direction, and highly adjustable clutch are all perfect for my needs. The small, long-lasting and fast-charging battery is quite useful for me. The magnetic holder for driver bits of all types works well for my purposes. The compact size gets into all kinds of small places. I love it!Five stars on the PS21.PS41I had originally planned to get just the PS21, but the combination with the PS40 was a good value, and although I was not sure I needed an impact driver, reading up on it, it sounded like a good idea, and a tool I would grow into. The advantage of an extra battery of the same size, using the same charger, seemed good.I really like the drill driver for quickly driving long screws into wood with less effort. I will be using this tool a lot for construction projects.BUT BEWARE! DON'T USE SHORT BITS WITHOUT A BIT HOLDER IN PS41I do have one complaint, which is that the driver bit attachment is significantly different from the PS21, and is not well described in the instructions, and this caused me a big problem.The instructions say the following: "The Bosch model PS41 Cordless Impact Driver has a collet that accepts only standard 1/4" hexagonal shank accessories with power groove." Well, ALL of my driver bits are standard 1/4" hexagonal shank, but I didn't know what a power groove was (isn't that something in a Michael Jackson tune?), and they offered no explanation. I looked closely at the bit I wanted to use, and it had little grooves in it, so I used it. All went well until I tried to remove it: it was jammed tight.If you look at a two inch screwdriver bit, just above the hexagonal shank there is a substantial indentation that goes all around the bit. THAT is what they mean by the "power groove". What I tried to use was a one-inch bit, and those bits NEVER have a power groove. To use a one-inch bit, you MUST use a bit holder with a power groove - or you will have a devil of a time getting that one-inch bit out again.Do I feel stupid? Sure. But hey, I'm an amateur, not a pro: there's nobody around to explain this to me, and the instructions COULD have had an extra sentence like "WARNING: Do NOT use one-inch bits directly in this tool without a bit holder or it will become jammed and difficult to remove, potentially voiding your warranty." and a little picture of the one inch bit with a circle and a line through it. I notice some people complain about getting reconditioned tools - I bet these are returns from people who jammed the PS41 and just returned it that way.Now then: if you make this mistake and call customer service, like I did, they may tell you to try tweezers or long-nose pliers to pull on the bit while pulling down on the collet. No way. Try this: get some narrow-nose vice grips. Clamp down on the bit just as tight as you can, releasing, retightening the screw, try again until you can't clamp any more, back off and clamp. Now put the vice grips in a vice, or clamp them to your bench somehow. Then while pulling down the collet, pull the drill for all you're worth. After a few tries, it worked, and no damage to the tool (OR the bit).And now I own a magnetic bit holder plus a variety of bits that don't need it. And you will too, if you read this warning.By the way: this warning ONLY applies to the PS41. The PS21 works FINE with short bits.PS41 gets four stars because it needs better instructions or a more versatile collet.BOTTOM LINEThese are great tools that suit my purposes well. I rate the PS21 five stars by itself. Because I wasted so much time getting the PS41 unjammed, and it would be so avoidable with better instructions or design, I rate four stars overall.

This combo is just great. I use these to hang cabinets. The impact is perfect for the heavy work, and the driver has a great clutch that prevents stripping screws on the light work like installing doors.
