Relish: My Life in the Kitchen

A fun graphic memoir!
RELISH: MY LIFE IN THE KITCHEN by Lucy Knisley is a graphic memoir about the author’s life and her relation to food. She was raised by two foodie parents. Her mother who is featured most highly in the book was a chef and her father also has a passion for food. Lucy was raised around kitchens and food, both in city and rural settings. The book also includes recipes displayed in an illustrated format as well.I picked this book up when looking through a list of books with recipes when I needed to fulfill a prompt. This one was recommended by a couple people and the graphic novel format had me intrigued. I really enjoyed the way this book combined food knowledge, personal life stories, and a good dose of humor throughout as well. There are quite a few recipes that sound great also!I would recommend this one to my food loving friends looking for a fun take on a nonfiction read!

Personally I loved this graphic novel
Personally I loved this graphic novel. Also, I think it's worth mentioning, since a lot of reviewers seem to be unfamiliar with what a "Graphic Novel" is. It's a comic book. It's got pictures in it, that's why it's called "graphic", and it tells a story, hence being a "novel". Ugh!Okay, now to my actual review! If you've read any other books by Knisley then you'll love this. Relish is a really lovely, slow paced memoir about Knisley's life through food. Each chapter is sort of based around a specific event, and the food is what seems to bring the event all together at the end. There are only a few recipes in the book but they're all accompanied by lovely infographic illustrations and directions. I especially love the cheese guide. This book will make you want to eat at every restaurant she mentions and I dream of her grandma's pickles! I must say I'm actually pretty jealous of her life, she traveled a lot as a kid, and even went to Europe with only a friend as a teen. What I would have given for my mother to let me do that! The way she describes each food item will make your mouth water, never have I craved a good croissant so much! Haha.Anyway, this is not an action packed spiderman type book, this is not a batman comic, it's a thought out, elegant graphic novel about a girls life through food, suitable for reading with your preteens, as a gift for teenagers, or any adult you know that likes food and art.

Just The Best
The only reason I haven't given 'My Life in the Kitchen' five stars is because I'm intent on leaving 5 for her next book. If I do 5 stars now, where will I go afterwards?Kinisley has had me in her illustrative storytelling grasp for almost a decade. Her work never loses its charm. That's because she tells real stories with heart. Her illustrations have such life that it never fails to color her books for me.Packed with recipes and lovely drawings of kitchen life, it's bound to make foodies proud and newbies ready to roll up their sleeves and explore - or order Blue Apron. A Cute Autobiographical Comic
I have a soft-spot for Autobiographical comics, be it a travelogue or just someone recounting a few of their life events. So this was something right up my alley. The only negative thing I have to say concerns the Kindle version of this graphic novel. Usually digital versions of comics are displayed as one page at a time and you can zoom in to enjoy the art closer up and read tiny text. Not with this Kindle version. Whoever formatted this must have never read or enjoyed comics, since they decided to display two pages at once on the screen and there is no option to zoom in. I'm reading this with the Kindle app for the Ipad mini, so having to read a comic in this fashion is irritating. I am unable to fully appreciate the art since the pages have been minimized in order to fit two pages on the screen. But I guess there's no worries about missing out on the text, since by tapping randomly on the screen I can have the text boxes enlarged, but not the entire page. I say randomly since sometimes the text boxes will enlarge if I'm trying to swipe to get to the next set of pages and I can't exit out of the text boxes unless I cycle through all of the text boxes. And just to peeve me off more, by enlarging the text box it actually blocks out parts of the comic panels. That seems like extra hard work to go into this digital version and manually set up these text boxes to enlarge, when they really could've just allowed the reader to zoom in and move around a single page.I really should've sent a sample page to myself first but it didn't occur to me someone would format a digital comic in this most idoitic fashion. This is actually my first time buying a Kindle version of a comic, I usually buy my e-comics somewhere else, but at least I know now to avoid buying any more Kindle comics. If there was a way to rate digital formats separate from the contents of the actual comic book itself, I would rate it a 0. As for now, I'm just returning it for a refund. It's current digital format is just too much of a pain to try and read.

Read this in my college writing about food and travel class!
I absolutely loved this book. For my second semester in college I decided to take a writing about food and travel class and this one was of the books we were required to read for the course. From the first chapter, I was hooked! I love how this book makes you feel like a kid again with the fun font and beautiful illustrations. I loved how the stories were personal right from Miss Lucy. I would highly recommend this book, a really fun read!

loved it
My husband and I both read this in the same day. It's a small book, but it's so fun to read that it went along very quickly. We both absolutely loved it, and our expectations were high as fans of Lucy Knisley's earlier book, "French Milk" (also wonderful). I love her quirky style and fantastic illustrations. Somehow Knisley comes across as extremely likeable and even humble despite her rather glamorous life and more than a little bit of name-dropping. I am unsure how she pulls it off, but I'm in for the long haul and consider myself a true fan!

Great book for everyone in love with food (just like Lucy is)
I enjoyed Lucy's last book a tiny bit more than Relish but this book is absolutely great too: I think a lot about food so the main theme in this book was very close to my heart and relatable!
