Pick up that bread! Featuring more than 90 delicious plant-based recipes, this groundbreaking, doctor-approved method could help you shed pounds, improve your health, save money, and change your life. “ The Starch Solution is one of the most important books ever written on healthy eating.”—John P. Mackey, co-CEO and director of Whole Foods Market, Inc. Fact: Carbs are good for you! Fear of the almighty carbohydrate has taken over the diet industry for the past few decades—including diets like Keto and Whole30—but this restriction can trigger an avalanche of shame and longing. In The Starch Solution , bestselling author John A. McDougall, MD, and his kitchen-savvy wife, Mary, propose that a starch-rich diet can actually help you lose weight, prevent a variety of ills, and even cure common diseases. By fueling your body primarily with carbohydrates rather than proteins and fats, you’ll feel satisfied, boost energy, and look and feel your best. A proponent of a plant-based diet for decades, Dr. McDougall presents an easy-to-follow plan that teaches you what to eat, what to avoid, how to make healthy swaps for your favorite foods, and smart choices when dining out. With a 7-Day Sure-Start plan, a helpful weekly menu planner, and recipes for all meals of the day—like Pumpkin-Walnut Muffins and Veggies Benedict for breakfast, Sloppy Lentil Joes and Tunisian Sweet Potato Stew for lunch or dinner, and Peach-Oatmeal Crisp for a sweet treat, as well as recipes for sauces and dressings—you’ll never go hungry and still lose weight! Review: The Most Important Book Dr. McDougall Has Written - The Starch Solution is a book to read from start to finish. I have read two other books by Dr. John McDougall and I keep referring back to them. I have seen and listened to Dr. McDougall speak in person, and over the years I have read and referred frequently to his newsletters. I am a 28-year vegan following his dietary guidelines. So, when he published The Starch Diet over ten years ago, I asked myself, do I really need to buy and read this book? Ten years after its publication, I finally bought the book. I am reading it, and I can tell you this is the most accessible and readable book Dr. McDougall has written, and perhaps one of the most important books on dietary health available to the public in print today. Dr. McDougall makes his case on the merits of the starch-based, whole foods, plant-based diet. In this book he has extracted the most important and vital information from his long career of medical research and practice and made it easily comprehensible and usable. From having written many books, articles, and newsletters, he has honed his writing skills, and has now produced his most informative and enjoyable-to-read publication yet. Especially noteworthy is his clear and concise discussion about the documented hazards of vitamin supplementation. The book is worth having on your bookshelf for this section on vitamin supplementation alone. He presents the most informative discussion I have ever read about vitamin B12 and identifies which type of B12 is optimum. He thoroughly discusses the importance of naturally acquired vitamin D from sunlight for overall health. And he describes a natural and recurring phenomenon in the human body which he refers to as "spontaneous healing" to illustrate the point that the human body has immense capability to recover from injury and illness. The title of the book "The Starch Solution" is meant to convey that Dr. McDougall has included a wealth of essential information describing a complete and natural dietary approach to achieve optimum health, making this book essential reading for every health-conscious person. The book is thoroughly footnoted and referenced to scientific research sources. The book also include 97 pages of the McDougall family's most favorite and simple palate pleasing recipes that anyone can prepare. Expert culinary skills are not required. Knowledge is power. The Starch Solution informs with facts, scientific research, and noble intent. Dr. McDougall's motivation is to educate and empower his patients and the public on how to avoid ill health and maximize optimum health in their lives. To quote Dr. McDougall from the introduction to this book: "I never took an oath to protect the financial interests of the medical industry. I did, however, take an oath to care for the sick and to keep them from harm and injustice, and to never give a deadly drug or procedure. I fully realize that the views I advocate cause people with vested interests to dislike me. But I can live with that unfairness. Too many physicians and dietitians pay allegiance to the big businesses of food and pharmaceuticals rather than to their customers, the patients." I highly recommend Dr. McDougall's book The Starch Solution. Review: Almost too good to be true--but it is!!! - I, like others, have gotten into the stream of trying to eat healthy and lose unwanted pounds. Being post-menopausal and having some weight issues, I tried Weight Watchers. The problem with it is it doesn't fit with my values and I kept having horrible cravings. I also was stuck for weeks and weeks. One week I walked 14 miles and didn't lose anything while being very, very careful. I used to follow Dr. McDougall in my younger years (I don't know why I stopped). My blood work was unbelievably good and my weight was stable and I was trim and felt great. So, I decided to get started again putting aside all those other books that created confusion in my mind. (Grain Brain, etc.) I made a commitment to stay on this program for a couple weeks just to see what would happen. I totally ate what is appropriate--LOTS of starches (I almost felt guilty) and lots of vegetables and some fruit. NO liquid fats, dairy or meat. I do have avocado sometimes because it adds so much. It has not even been a week and I have lost 5.5lbs WITHOUT EFFORT and WITHOUT BEING HUNGRY AT ALL!!!!!! People state how expensive being a vegan is...it isn't. I bought a 10lb bag of potatoes for $3.99, lentils and peas for soup for under $2.00 a pound. I cannot even express my delight!!!! I highly suggest you sign up for his free newsletter which has inspiring stories. Oh, and by the way, I didn't/don't have a ton of weight to lose. Only about 14 more pounds. So I can attest to the difficulty once you get to about 20lbs to lose. It can be harder. BUT, this has been so unbelievable for me!!!! Just try it for a little while...truly try it. Give it a fair chance. Don't go mixing it with other diets and the like. I know it's different and takes some adjustment, but for what Dr. McDougall offers on his web site and how many people he's helped, well, you could be one of his stars in no time!!!! I also liked the fact the foods you eat are easily found. Nothing strange. No special mail orders (for the most part...I did order curry paste from desertcart). AND you can eat white potatoes!!! I made "fake" fries and they were outstanding. When I say fake, I mean the potatoes were mainly baked then I cut them up from there and baked them the rest of the way. I did have to "hit" the pan with some PAM because I didn't want them to stick, but believe me, it was just a "HIT" with the PAM and not grossly saturated. I am loving this program! I love the fact that I am helping the planet and that I can let animals live in peace. I love that I am living by example to others. I have peace in my heart and it's all because of this book!!! It is written to the average person and it is NOT preachy. What is so wonderful is that Dr. McDougall isn't a saint. In fact, in his early days he was quite the pistol!!! THANK YOU Dr. McDougall for giving me great information and very good recipes (WONDERFUL actually) to help me achieve my good health goals!!! BEST BOOK EVER!!!!!

Give it a read, all you have to lose is your weight!
In 2011, I read Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease: The Revolutionary, Scientifically Proven, Nutrition-Based Cure for health reasons, and made the switch to the whole foods plant-based diet. Although I had been a "part-time vegetarian," the first several weeks were tough, but it got easier, especially as I got healthier, lost weight, increased energy and got off several medications. Since that time I have become more and more convinced that this is the best lifestyle for me, and have been picking up more and more books to better equip me. I've become a fan of Lindsay Nixon (The Happy Herbivore) and we love her The Happy Herbivore Cookbook: Over 175 Delicious Fat-Free and Low-Fat Vegan Recipes , as well as her other titles. I've enjoyed books by Rip Essenstyn, including My Beef with Meat: The Healthiest Argument for Eating a Plant-Strong Diet--Plus 140 New Engine 2 Recipes . Lately I've read Whole: Rethinking the Science of Nutrition , by T. Colin Campbell, author of The China Study: The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted And the Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss, And Long-term Health . And I recently decided to take a look at this volume by Dr. McDougall. While all of the above authors fall into the same food camp, McDougall stresses the importance of complex carbohydrates (starches) in our diet. He clearly points out the all around the world, healthy populations base their diets on starches (whether it's corn, wheat, potatoes, rice, taro root or other starches). In the diet he promotes here, he says you can eat as much as you want, until you feel full. And you will not only lose weight, but will get healthy in the process. I'm already convinced that it's true, because I've been following him on Facebook and have given this modification to my diet a try for several months. I feel more satisfied, and I have not gained back any of the weight I lost when I first began the diet. In these pages, Dr. McDougall tells the story of his personal journey in discovering this way of eating, and how he eventually started his own clinic in northern California. He addresses the poisons of meat, the healing power of the starch-based diet, the politics of food, and how, with our current American diet, we are eating our planet to death. He addresses questions about where you get your protein and calcium on a plant-based diet. And he discuses the problems of fish, as well as how you can be an unhealthy fat vegan (I know some, and what he says makes perfect sense). He also explains why it makes sense to get away from supplements, and he talks about the benefits (yes, benefits) of salt and sugar. The latter third of this volume is a cookbook by his wife, Mary McDougall. I have not tried any of these yet, but as I skim through the pages, they look delicious, easy to make, and completely in line with other plant-based cookbooks I've been using. While I can heartily recommend all the books mentioned above, I think this one by Dr. McDougall would be an excellent starting point. Give it a try. You have nothing to lose but your weight!

"The fat you eat is the fat you wear"
I have 3 books written by phisicians: Dr. Barnard, Dr. Esselstyn and Dr. McDougall. They contain plenty of information about vegan diet with low fat or none. This is a vegan, low fat diet. Dr. McDougall emphasizes eating starches and explains why they don't promote excess weight gain, considering it a myth. First part of the book is all about -as you can guess- starches, what they are, types, history, etc. There's a section with frequent questions about where to get the protein or calcium with a vegan diet. Part three of the book is about what to eat and what to avoid, healthy substitutes, eating out, a seven day start plan and recipes. Be aware that being a vegan is not enough to be healthy, "a great number of vegans are overweight and unhealthy" because of vegan junk food. Dr. McDougall has a youtube channel and a web site that you can check out for more information.

Here's your longevity reading list
NEW COMMENT BY THIS REVIEW AUTHOR 04 APRIL 2018: In the review, I have made some mistakes. First mistake: I overstate the value of our frugivore ancestry contribution. Second mistake: I understate the value of McDougall's emphasis of starches. After the passage of more time, the value of McDougall's starch emphasis has risen greatly in my overall assessment. McDougall is very, very, very correct. We are starchivores above all else. Original Review: If you are on any medications for chronic conditions, I think you should read Dr. Michael Greger's book "How Not to Die." Even if you are not on medications, read Dr. Greger's book. For the simplest blueprint of a solid shot at reaching age 95, I think you should read Dr. John McDougall's book "The Starch Solution." The blueprint is as follows: eliminate meat, dairy, eggs and separated oils, eat all you want of the satiating complex-starch-centered foods (always prepared without separated oils). This is an excellent level of achievement for the masses that removes the killers and satisfies your appetite. If you want to zoom past age 95 and shoot for age 115, then you're going to have to intelligently diversify your plant diet and embrace the micronutrient fine tuning of Dr. Joel Fuhrman's book "Eat to Live." Dr. Fuhrman is right on. Here again, you'll also reference Dr. Greger's book all the way. Both have a key daily list. Bring it all together by frequently visiting Dr. Greger's website. Dr. Greger scours the tens of thousands of annual journal articles on health and nutrition and keeps us fully up to date. Dr. Greger practices solid first-principle, fact-based logic of the type normally seen in physicists more than in physicians. Dr. Greger is smart and never fooled by poorly designed cohort studies and the red herrings of others' bad assumptions. Dr. Greger presents topical summaries in short videos that are rich in information and delivered often with classic humor. I suspect if we applied these dietary principles to our children from birth, then they'll have a legitimate shot at living to 145. I personally see Dr. McDougall's book as "what not to eat" supported with the easiest version of "eat this instead." I think of his message as the coarse-tuning knob on an analog radio. Honestly, most people will only accept the coarse adjustment, thus making Dr. McDougall's contribution valuable for the masses. He seems to think about things from a societal-success level and his starch emphasis is good for the dietary success of the group. However, if you want more than just what works well for the masses, if you really want to master nutritional dietary success, then, in my opinion, I suggest one think of Drs. Greger's and Fuhrman's input as the fine-tuned guidance (a little more attention to leafy greens, cruciferous veg, berries, other fruit, etc), like the fine-tuning knob on the analog radio. Dr. McDougall will get you out of disease and to the comparative-health olympics; Drs. Fuhrman and Greger will put you on the medals podium at those olympics. Some authors in this field present strong counsel against supplements. Still, all agree on B-12 and ground flax seed (for omega-3). However, I think Dr. Greger presents the most well-thought case on D-3. I strongly appreciate dietary and health logic that reaches deeper in time all the way back to my evolutionary, metabolic ancestors. Yes, we developed higher amylase production over time and became very starchivore-leaning; however, the foundation of our metabolism still seems solidly to be that of Vitamin-C-needing frugivores, best served by D-3 production at Equatorial Africa levels. I think it is most accurate to say that we are true Frugivore-Starchivore Hybrids. Some authors may focus more on the Starchivore side of us. Other authors may focus more on the Frugivore side of us. Neither point of view is wrong. We’re just hybrids. If I had to name names, I’d say Dr. McDougall is Starchivore-oriented, Dr. Fuhrman is Frugivore-oriented, Dr. Greger is hitting that Hybrid sweet spot, and all three authors and all three books mentioned here present an excellent overall collection of information that helps any interested reader find their own particular version of the Hybrid sweet spot that works best for them. The Longevity Path then… 1. Eliminate the known killers ('cause they're killing you.) 2. Lean on the Starchivore side of your metabolic heritage and enjoy all those satisfying starches while reminding your taste buds and body that you actually do, in fact, quite enjoy eating plants! 3. And, for that fraction of you with the extra measure of desire for excellence, move deeper into your Frugivore roots by intelligently fine-tuning your nutrient supply and efficiency. Finally, big kudos to Drs. T. Colin Campbell, Caldwell Esselstyn, and Neal Barnard among many others for their equally excellent books and leadership in this field.

It's working for me
I've been "McDougalling" for 4 weeks now. I started out with Esselstyn ("Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease") and then realized McDougall had the same rules, only he puts more emphasis on *enjoying* your meals by focusing on starch foods like beans, brown rice, whole grain pasta, polenta, etc. I like that approach. I've seen others comment that this diet is *not* idea for weight loss unless you strongly limit the starches, but I haven't found that to be the case. I've lost over 20 pounds so far and the past few weeks I've been losing 4 pounds weekly. I also don't find I'm "spending all my time preparing food". It's really quite easy. For breakfast I have Grapenuts and (uncooked) rolled oats with unsweetened almond milk and 1/2 banana or nectarine. For lunch, a salad with some left overs from dinner the night before or a microwaved potato with some allowed soup over it (I like McDougall's bean based soups, which my grocery store carries). For dinner, brown rice pasta with frozen veggies mixed in and a can of diced tomatoes, or brown rice with some quick canned bean-onion-musroom-parsley mix. I also like getting steamed veggies and brown rice from our local Chinese place. Another quick dish is mashed potatoes with veggies on top. I find the food satisfying and filling, especially after having been a low carber for so long. And the weight is falling off. I also walk 10K steps a day, so I'm sure that helps. So far, I couldn't be more pleased with this. Just try it for yourself. I read the very long 3 star post from the guy who didn't lose weight on it. Maybe it depends on your body type, or how much volume you eat, or what exercise you do. I can tell you I'm a 52 year old female and I've had a great deal of trouble losing on other diets in the past, generally plateauing out after 20 pounds or so -- indefinitely. My body has been responding very well to this plan and I feel good on it. Hoping to coast down another 20 pounds or so. I can see eating this way for life. I also feel it's *healthy* and not a fad diet. I'm pleased that it is in alignment with Esselstyn because heart disease runs in my family and I feel I'm protecting myself from that while also losing the weight.

Proper Nutrition is the Best Medicine.
In T. Colin Campbell's Nationally Bestselling book, "The China Study"-- what the New York Times has called the "Grand Prix" of epidemiology Campbell has this to say about Dr. McDougall. "Dr. John McDougall's nutrition and health knowledge is phenomenal, greater than any other doctor I've met and greater than any of my nutrition colleagues in academia." Where nutrition is concerned, Dr. McDougall is the man. Epidemiology is the study of health in well-defined populations. This, Dr. McDougall's latest book, "The Starch Solution" is not just another fad diet book. Other than a few tweaks here and there over the years this is basically the same diet he has been advocating for over 40 years. A whole plant food diet that centers around the starches. Fruits and vegetables are also part of the McDougall Diet but starch is the main course. Starches are the energy foods of the plant world-- rice, potatoes, corn, beets, squash, beans, carrots, tomatoes, pasta,... There are three basic types of carbohydrates--sugar, cellulose, and starch. For a sudden burst of energy nothing beats simple sugar. Cellulose is also a form of sugar, glucose, that is bonded to indigestible parts of plants. Cellulose doesn't provide much energy but does provide fiber. According to Dr. McDougall the Gold Medal for the most beneficial carbohydrate for humans goes to starch. Starch--complex carbohydrates, is valuable to us because we can break them down into simple sugars that provide sustained energy and keep us feeling full and satisfied. Unlike most other diets there is no need to go hungry on the McDougall Diet. It is not how much we eat so much as it is what we eat. Starches are filling without being fattening. The starch based diet is imminently practical. Most diets are not practical for they are starvation diets that at some point most of us will give up on and go on a binge, the unhealthy cycle of yo-yo dieting. A starch centered diet is the best way to get off the roller coaster ride of the typical overfed but undernourished Western Diet. We are biologically "Starchivores". We have a plant eaters Teeth. Tongue. Throat. Stomach. Intestines. Liver. Kidneys. Around the globe healthy populations, past and present, get most of their calories from starch. For such groups of people the chronic diseases that are the product of the typical Western Diet that is high in meats, fats, and processed foods, are in most cases all but unknown. Type II Diabetes is by definition a disease caused by one's diet. A proper diet cures Type II Diabetes. For many if not most of us the "Starch Solution" is the cure for nearly everything that ails us. There are exceptions to every rule but this rule. In my opinion any of the Whole Food diets are far superior to the typical Western Diet. To each his or her own. "Let thy food be thy medicine." Hippocrates.

Rock solid, evidence based, scientifically analysed natural whole foods plant-based diet
Dr John McDougall's "The Starch Solution" puts together rock solid science and evidence for a natural, whole food, plant based starch, grain, vegetable and fruit diet for great health and well-being. The Solution advocates elimination of all animal based foods. All the information given in this book is summarized on Dr. McDougall's website and is available there for free. There are also a great many other free resources listed there that will help all those looking for healing solutions either as wellness seekers or healers wanting to help others. (Just Google McDougall Starch Solution to get links to go onto his site.) I am very impressed by the authenticity and practicality of the book and signed up for a special Starch Solution Certification Course. The course has helped me to understand this subject in much greater detail. It has enhanced my effectiveness as a health care professional in alternative healing therapies. I am now able to help my patients much more than I could earlier, through the mechanism of adding systematic dietary changes for my patients as laid out in the Starch Solution. * I may mention here that most of my practice deals with the health issues of those coming to me from the modern system of medicine and therapies, not having found any great disease-reversal or relief there. At best the modern medicine and healthcare system provides relief inasmuch it permits one to be somewhat more functional and permits one to "tolerate" the attrition to one's health. It also provides urgently needed and life-saving measures. However it does nothing to reverse the diseases listed, which are essentially and truly nutritional diseases and that issue is very inadequately addressed in the overall current healthcare and medical therapeutics and practices. * The good news is that all that detailed information from the Certification Course is in the book in a distilled, accurate and usable form. The certification course has over 8 hours of audio-video lectures, the key information of which is distilled down to this book, and the information in the book is further distilled down to the bare essentials and a practical plan to follow, available for free on Dr McD's website. Quite simply, the process works when followed with a reasonable, increasing degree of compliance over time-- if not following the process 'cold turkey' as it were. People who once get onto this process and experience the positive-to-remarkably-significant results in a few days tend to stay with the process. * The evidence presented in the "Starch Solution" looks at civilizations and cultures past and present over thousands of years, and details where such traditional dietary practices are still being followed today with great wellness. * Importantly---it documents that where these traditional diets change to a richer western diet, how the health begins to deteriorate within the same generation and dramatically so in the next. Hence diet and nutrition and not genes or other factors affect health and wellness primarily. *The book lays out a very compelling case that today's most deadly chronic diseases are in fact nutritional diseases that can be reversed primarily by nutritional measures. This is a bold and radical claim that should excite and encourage all those in and associated with health and wellness activities. Reading this book and other associated material makes it clear that misinformation, partial information and speculation have propelled the belief of the public that a meat, fish, dairy and fatty diet is essential to health. The evidence is to the contrary--those on a meat, dairy, fish and fatty diet are rapidly becoming sicker and sicker. Dr. McDougall points out that opposition to a natural whole foods plant based starch, grain, vegetable and fruit diet in the face of the overwhelming hard scientific evidence comes from beliefs generated by a great marketing job from those whose livelihoods are connected to and dependent upon maintaining an opposing view--within the meat and dairy industries as well as government. (In his video lectures, he paraphrases Upton Sinclair--"It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it.") Dr McD is at pains to dispel the notion that he is advocating some kind of conspiracy theory. He points out that the people who have their entrenched interests in the meat and dairy industries, equally have families and loved ones who are getting sick from the meat and dairy they eat. * So it is not a conspiracy, but rather an issue of protecting one's paycheck. While there is nothing wrong with that, the consequences and price to pay for doing this is this painful, costly list ---obesity, diabetes, heart and coronary artery disease (CAD), strokes, osteoporosis, liver, lung and kidney disease, cancer, depression... and the list goes on. * Dietary choices are shaped by many factors including social, cultural and financial ones, and more broadly by one's personal ideology about their life choices and beliefs. In order to look at something new in a fair way, one must set aside--temporarily at least, one's biases or beliefs in order to see things as they are. Then one may choose to live with one's established beliefs and biases--or form new beliefs based on truly understanding the evidence. * The problems experienced by people in following this whole foods plant based diet appear to be coming majorly from not understanding how this works and how to go about following it. In the name of 'vegan' there are many variations of what is 'vegan' and what works is mixed and diluted by what doesn't work for sustainable health. Hence all similar appearing diets get tarred with the same brush of unreliability, quackery etc. Therefore, to be clear, this diet is not a catchall 'Vegan' diet, but as Dr McD points out, it is a plant based starch, grains, fruits and vegetables diet. For simplicity he calls it the Starch diet as that is overall the single largest component of the diet. Dr McDougall says that Human beings are in effect "starchivores", who are naturally seeking complex sugars (starch) and simple sugars (fruits and some vegetables) through their taste buds as well as according to the way their metabolism is designed. Having starchy food and sugars satiates and fills one more than fats can ever do and with far less calories. The book also debunks the widespread misinformation that starch and sugars make one fat--documented research shows that under most conditions sugar does not turn into fat in the body, it is burnt off as fuel, while the fat one eats goes straight in to the body's stores. As Dr. McDougall says very graphically--"The fat you eat is the fat you wear!" * The practical demonstration of this is, that, where people change their dietary patterns to follow a whole foods plant based, starch, grain, vegetable and fruit diet systematically as explained in the book, they quickly experience a radical change in their wellness status for the better. Any slight additions of animal based foods to the diet, especially animal proteins, is seen to dilute and degrade the health benefits of following this altered hybrid system--which is then no longer a true 'Vegan', whole foods natural plant based diet. If we are really our own well-wishers we owe it to ourselves to first properly and really understand what this diet is all about, and then follow it systematically for a few days to experience the results of it.

Meine Empfehlung: Kaufen durchlesen umsetzen.

An amazing sollution to heal yourself and the earth.
This book contains the final answer as to who we are and what we should eat. It is cleverly crafted to explain the causes of diseases and the different pitfalls of other diets (fruit only, Atkins, keto, weight watchers...) The book gives plenty of explanations about why animal products and other fats cause disease. The emphasis on what to eat is very clear and the food tastes great! It is easy to stick on the diet and on the long run you begin to appreciate foods that are simple and easy to prepare. You will save thousands by avoiding the foods that make us and the planet sick while improving your health. It is incredible. As a fit young 25 year old I did not expect to get rid of my acnea, constipation, hémorroïdes, energy levels and so on. I thought I was healthy, this way of eating proved me wrong.
