Yes, its a model aeroplane kit. Like Airfix. Lots of small parts you glue together yourself then paint.

Does this require priming beforehand?

Yes I always prime my models before painting the correct colours - it is definitely beneficial to the final finish. I used Halfords Acrylic grey primer on mine

Are the pilots pre-painted?

No. The entire kit is supplied unpainted.

How did you guys get the yellow? it's required to mix to make other colours but cannot see how, and same with matt black. am i missing items?

Revell Gift Sets and Model Sets include the main paint colours for any given project, not every colour required. As this is a Skill Level 4 kit for intermediate modellers, there is an assumption that the builder will already have a selection of commonly used colours like yellow and black.
