How many watts does one of these use?

The wire in the butterfly uses 0.4 watts when on. Since the butterfly flaps its wings and is only on 1/4 of the time, it uses an average of 0.1-0.15 watts.

Some reviews say this only works when plugged into a computer??? Does it have a way to run on batteries and how big is it?

Great product, kids love it. It has been running. continuously since Aug 2014. It came with a long thin cord and a power adapter to plug into a 110V electrical outlet. Mine did not have an adapter to run off a computer. Looks delicate, but is tough as nails.
