What is the widest the dies can open? Want to compress a dual ferrule (oval or figure 8 shape) but need to know how wide this opens.

I used it for 00 gauge wire crimping ends. Smallest die fits standard 4 gauge wire for auto battery.

Can this be used on stainless steel control cables/wire rope instead of electrical applications? Can I use a stainless steel button end?

It work well for lead and metal battery cable ends. I have not tried stainless ends.

is this able to be used with copper and aluminum?

Yes it is, practice on a few ends first to make sure you have the right die. The real purpose of a hydraulic crimping tool is to ensure that the crimped end compresses all the copper wires into a solid end not allowing air into the end which leads to corrosion.
