California Costumes Child Pioneer Girl Costume

A last minute purchase for granddaughter’s Pioneer Day at school. So glad I made the leap of faith on a pretty “costume” outfit that was so reasonable priced. Was not expecting much re: quality material, but was quite pleased. It’s not going to survive many, many washings ( in fact the label instructs to NOT launder in washing mashing), but I think it would be fine if gently hand washed and hung to dry. The design is exactly right, sizing was on target and granddaughter said it was soft and comfortable to wear. ( Didn’t want to take it off at the end of the day.) Apron strings wrap around to self-tie in the back. Bonnet was appropriate for the size of dress. I think the bonnet would likely fit a variety of head sizes.

Ordered the size Small for my 8 year-old. It fit great, although was a bit long. Once she put on boots with a slight heel, the length was much better. So depending on how tall your child is.....you may have to hem the dress. Also, be aware that this is a polyester outfit, NOT a cotton one. My daughter used this for Pioneer day at her school. Many people want a cotton dress (more authentic) but we did not have time to make one or buy one on etsy (70.00+ and takes a LONG time) and this was perfect for what was needed. The matching bonnet fit perfectly. Bottom line: My daughter loved wearing it and enjoyed her day. That is all that matters, right? :) VERY, VERY happy with this purchase ! The small does say 6-8 years, but it would be LONG for an average 6-7 year old.

Very cute costume, made of polyester fabric. Because of the numerous reviews, I did order a size down and I am glad I did. The small fit my usually size 8-10 granddaughter, perfectly with a little room to spare. She is taller and the dress could stand a hem of and inch or two, so it does run long, but I would rather have too long then too short. [There is iron on hem tape for those who don't have the time to sew]. Bonnet is quite cute on. She wanted it for a pilgrim costume for her schools Thanksgiving celebration, and really is just great for that. I couldn't make a dress and bonnet it for the very reasonable price of 27.00. My 9 year old is very tall for her age (she wears a 14/16). I bought the largest size for her and it fits, but it won't last long before it is too small for her. Reviews from other people warned me that it would be too long, and that's what I was hoping for given her height. Turns out the length is perfect and it fits around the waist and hips, but the sleeves are at about 3/4, which doesn't fit the period. The hat fits and is adorable. The material is great - she is comfortable. I am giving this 4 stars because on the larger sizes it should have a proper opening/closure on the back. This has about an 8 inch opening down the back for kids to put this on and it is closed with velcro.

My daughter needed a Laura Ingalls Wilder costume for a school presentation. She is a tall and thin 9 yr old and normally wears size 10/12 clothes. We bought this in a size Medium, since reviews said it runs big. It fit her perfectly, with room to grow (though, it doesn't look at all like it's too big). We also bought the "SCARLET DARKNESS Girls Pioneer Colonial Dress Prairie Costume Dress" in blue, size 12, to compare options. (The size 12 of the Scarlet Darkness dress fit her similarly.) Ultimately, my daughter decided to keep this dress for a few reasons: 1. The material is so comfy, it feels like pajamas. While the Scarlet Darkness dress has a fabric made for real dress wearing and not just as a costume, my daughter was drawn to the softness of this dress. 2. This dress has a full apron (covering chest and waist), which is attached to the dress. The Scarlet Darkness dress has a separate waist apron. My daughter simply preferred the more covered look and that the apron was attached. 3. This dress' bonnet has a velcro strap under the chin and had no creases on the bonnet, so it framed my daughter's face without flopping down over her forehead. The Scarlet Darkness bonnet has to be tied under the chin, resulting in long bow ties hanging down, which she didn't prefer. Also, that bonnet happened to have a large crease in the middle, causing one side of the bonnet to flop slightly over her forehead. We struggled to find a way to make the bonnet stand up so it wouldn't flop on her face. I might have tried ironing and starching the bonnet to remove the crease, but since we were deciding which dress to keep, I didn't want to do anything to the material before making a decision. So, primarily because of the bonnet and the apron, and also because my daughter preferred the softer fabric, she chose to go with this dress. However, she was absolutely delighted with both options, and made her decision ultimately on what she felt were somewhat petty choices. She admitted that if she had only ever tried one of the dresses without the other, she would have been happy with either one of them. I would recommend both this dress and the Scarlet Darkness option as a costume and as a play dress for pioneer enthusiasts.

This product runs true to size or a little small. It worked for the costume my daughter needed for a program at school

This dress was MUCH MUCH larger than I expected. My child wears a 5t and this was giant on her. I had to alter it significantly. I think this would fit a child of about 10-13 years. This dress would almost fit a small adult! That said, it's a really cute costume. The bonnet is a little floppy on top but not bad. The bow is permanently tied and attaches with velcro. It stays on teh head pretty well. The dress appears durable enough that it could be used several times. The material is soft and its really, really cute. It was a hit for Halloween.

This Pioneer Costume is exactly as depicted. My daughters needed this for school...Pioneer Days! The dress is a pretty blue calico print with cotton lace trim. It is plenty long and may even need to be hemmed. I'd much prefer too long, with the option to shorten, than toooo short. The white apron is attached, velcro closure in the back, and the fabric snags, if you aren't careful. The matching bonnet is darling. It has a hole at the bottom for a pony tail, the bow is permanently tied, and the strap that sits under the chin to hold the hat on has a velcro fastener as well. The bonnet is a generous size to fit several size heads. :) The price and the style is definitely worth the price.
