Reliable Snow Chains for Emergency Winter Driving
Reliable Snow Chains for Emergency Winter Driving These SCC Radial Chain Cable Tire Chains have been my go-to set for years, and theyโve proven themselves in icy and snowy conditions. Theyโre lightweight and much easier to store and handle than the bulky link-style chains I used in the past. The design makes them relatively quick to put on and take off, though I strongly recommend practicing in your driveway before youโre stuck on the roadside in a stormโinstalling in bad weather without practice can be frustrating. Performance-wise, they do exactly what theyโre supposed to: improve traction for starting, stopping, and cornering on snow and ice. On a recent trip into the mountains, these chains kept my car steady on steep, slick roads where other vehicles were spinning out. They ride a bit bumpier on plowed pavement, but thatโs true of all chains. They stayed tight and didnโt slip once I had them properly secured. A few notes: * Fit is criticalโdouble-check your tire size against the manufacturerโs chart. * The company says not to use tensioners, and Iโve had no issue with them staying snug without. * After use, I rinse and dry them, then spray with a little lubricant to prevent rust. Stored properly, theyโll last for multiple seasons. * Like all chains, youโre limited to about 30 mph, so theyโre not for speed but for safety. Bottom line: A dependable and affordable set of cable-style tire chains that are perfect to keep in the trunk for winter emergencies. Easy to mount, compact to store, and reliable when you need them most.

Good for small cars
I bought these right before the January 2016 blizzard that hit the east coast. Okay, where I live it wasn't a blizzard per se, but it did leave 14 inches of snow on the ground. Here in Central Virginia we aren't used to that much snow, and my little Ford Focus wasn't exactly built for it, either. I made the mistake of not putting these on the car before the snow started. There were only a couple of inches on the ground when I did, but the instructions (and just about every other review, probably) say to test fit them first so you'll know what you're doing when you really need them. Anyone who knows me knows I did not do that, so they took me a little longer to get around the tires than they should have. It isn't a difficult process, but doing it the first time with snow already under those tires is a pain and makes it take longer than it should. So please, for your own sake, if you know snow is coming the next day, put them on before it starts falling. If the forecast was wrong you can always take them off again. Once these things were on, they worked like a champ. When it snows, I have to work. The snow started falling that Friday and I drove to work right at the beginning of it. I did not put the chains on the tires until after I arrived. Like I said above, there were already a couple of inches on the ground by then, which made the process more difficult. I probably spend about half an hour doing it. By the time I left work that night, there were probably 6 or 7 inches on the ground. While that may not be a lot for many of you reading this, it's a lot for us here in Richmond, VA. Since the snow was coming down pretty steadily, the snow plows hadn't been able to accomplish much at that point, and a lot of the roads I had to take had not been touched. But, with these chains on the tires the Focus had absolutely no problems whatsoever. The traction light did not come on one time--and it's pretty sensitive, usually lighting up whenever the car hits a decent-sized puddle. There was no speeding down the road (instructions say keep it to round 30 or 35, I believe) but no slipping or sliding. Braking wasn't a problem, nor was getting going from a stop. I only had a couple of small hills to traverse, but there were no problems there, either. Fast-forward to Sunday morning, and it was a different of a story. The car had been parked since Friday night when I got home (not sure how I managed to NOT have to work Saturday, but I wasn't complaining). By then, there were 14 inches of snow on the road (my road had not yet seen a plow of any kind) and it had drifted up over the headlights on the Focus. In that situation, the chains really couldn't do much at all. Even after I dug out the car, this snow didn't pack very well, so it was impossible to get "on top of it". The chains really couldn't do much when the snow was high enough for the front bumper to be acting like a plow. Fortunately a real plow came along just in time for me to leave for work. It only had time to make one pass, so there were still about 6 inches on the ground when I was able to leave, but that was no more of a problem than it had been Friday night. So overall I was pleased with how the chains worked. For a small car like the Focus, they make 6 or 7 inches of snow no problem to navigate. Having true winter tires might work just as well but chains are a lot cheaper--especially when you live in a place where you'll only have to use them once or twice a year.

Insane traction
Extremely impressed with these chains, they will get you through anything, tested in worst conditions possible- they are very thin and flimsy, but work great, in a fwd car, climbed 6 miles with parts having a 10-15 incline (Extremely steep mountian) with 2 inches of ice & 3 inch of snow on top, did lose a lot of steering control but still manageable, (delay, itd slip for a moment then grip and at other times, slide one direction and need countersteering, but it climbed Chains look a little abused after using them in this way, expecting will last a few more similar trips then need replacing, If wasn't such an incline im sure these wouldn't take as much wear and tear

Best chain ever
It took me less than 10 minutes to put the chains on and about 1 minute to take them off. Iโd say theyโre even easier to install than snow socks. The design is simple and straightforward, which makes the whole process quick and hassle-free. I was able to put them on without even reading the instructions. Definitely recommend these if youโre looking to buy snow chains!

Just dont.
The small coils that should have given me traction spun with my wheel. They were worse than useless in icy road.

Great for ice and snow emergencies
I purchased these this past Summer when they are at their cheapest, and used them yesterday (1/2/2014). The roads got worse and worse until cars were literally sliding sideways off the road due to ice, and the snow was still falling fast. I found a (relatively) safe place to pull over, in front of another vehicle with headlights on to help me put them on, got back on the road then I navigated the icy hills and curves with no problem at all. Other cars were doing crazy things all around me. I used mine for 11 miles, the last 9 of which were plowed/salted (didn't feel like taking them off). They were on as tight at the end as the beginning. The ride is very bumpy if you're not going over packed ice and snow. Of course when I got them I tried them to make sure they fit OK, which they did. Some listings have more than one application for the same size tire. If your tire size is one of these, this is a clue that you really have to be careful about fit. After using them, rinse with tap water and then lay them out under a lamp to dry. Then spray them with FluidFilm to prevent rust. You can use WD40 to help get them dry, but it will do nothing to prevent rust beyond that. Pro-Tips: 1. Order in Spring or Summer for best price. 2. Install one in nice weather. Paint the connector segment that corresponds to ideal tension a bright color. 3. Put a pair of work gloves in the box with the chains. Disposable heavy duty rubber gloves are best because they have enough feel to do the connections. 4. Keep a tarp, or use a floor mat while installing in bad weather. (I keep a small tarp under a floor mat) 5. To install easily, put on top of tire and then push all the way over onto the axle. Pull the far side connector back and hook it up, then pull it back over tire and install near side connector. 6. I found that 4 (2 sets) of SC1030 will just fit in one box, if you lay them all on top of each other and roll them up together. This may vary by model. Finally, putting on chains in bad weather is a hassle, taking them off once you reach a plowed road is a hassle, and there will always be bad reviews from folks who got the wrong size (for whatever reason). But when the roads are icy and crazy, there's no substitute, not even studded Winter Tires will do as well.

Chains work, but are a pain. They make you long for springtime.
I used these chains about five times during the past winter. Before I used them I watched the installation video on YouTube about five times and practiced installing them in good weather. It was very difficult to pull the inside part of the chain to the correct tension, particularly in the cold. My recommendation is to install them before it snows if you think you will need them. I kept a large, flat piece of cardboard and a plastic sheet in the back of the car in case I didn't install them in time and had to crawl around on the ground. There was no way to put them on without getting dirty. That said, they worked fine as long as I stayed on snowy roads. I followed the instructions about not exceeding twenty miles per hour and the car felt much more sure-footed. The problem is that my routes take me on snow-packed back roads and plowed highways. When you drive on a cleared road the chains make so much noise you feel like you are damaging something. Usually I would get to a plowed road and just take them off (getting dirty). I kept a plastic tub in the back of the car in which I stored the chains when I removed them. They get wet and salty and then the little coils rust, and the rust gets all over everything. By the end of winter the chains had worn in and were a little more flexible and easier to install. I think I can do it in a little less than ten minutes if there is no snow on the ground. If you drive in snow (which gets packed in the wheel wells) and then want to put them on, you will be disappointed because there is no room, even for these compact chains. Put them on ahead of time. They are quick and easy to remove if you don't need them. I put them away, and I'll use them again next year. Once they're on the car, they work as advertised. A final warningโyou will get metal slivers in your skin from the cables. If you wear leather gloves, you are protected but you lose a lot of the dexterity you need to hook these up.

Practice putting on before actually using them in snow, youโll save lots of time! Use size chart!
Size chart was very helpful and they fit and performed great, make sure to have your time numbers ready when purchasing! Awesome price! Going to use them for all of our snow trips! I do recommend to practice putting them on a couple times, it takes a little practice and practicing when youโre actually going to use them is painfully cold and takes forever not to mention expensive if you pay to have them put on. So save yourself the money, half the time and learn how to put them on in warmer conditions, learning this is essential for travelers! Donโt drive with them on outside of snow just get the feel of putting and securing them. If youโve never used chains before keep in mind that heavy snow will still effect your vehicle, primarily your braking. Give yourself plenty of room from the car I front of you, keep in mind that you will NOT stop as you would normally. Braking in snow does take extra time and distance so just keep at least 2 cars distance from other cars and plan on taking longer to slow down. Donโt slam on breaks, ease into a halt and get a feel for the way your vehicle stops preferably when there isnโt other cars around. Use extra caution in heavyly snowed downhills and uphills as sliding can sometimes happen and slowing down when going down hill will take extra time. Sliding can sometimes happen, donโt panic just ease into the breaks manage your steering and concentrate. Itโs also normal for the car to feel bumpy and for it to make noise, donโt worry about it unless you feel like it is super excessive. But noise and bumpyness is normal while using snow chains. Drive slow and donโt be afraid to pull over to let other cars go ahead, I know chains can feel a little intimidating but just get a feel for them and adjust your driving. Lastly, enjoy the beautiful snowy adventures and drive safe!

Good traction, but takes a bit of work to get them on correctly and secure.
A bit more tricky to install on a RWD sports car due to less clearance. Practice getting them on at home in the driveway first. My sports car still had high performance all seasons on them so they were closer to a summer tire. I couldn't even move the car up my driveway on half an inch of hard snow. For RWD car, I found that laying the chains down with the yellow clips pointing towards the front of the car straight behind the rear tires and backing the car up a couple feet before draping them over the tires worked the best for me. It says make sure the links are equal or within 1 link of each other on both sides in the instructions but I suggest adjust it so it's TIGHTER ON THE OUTSIDE WHEEL than the inside by 1 or 2 links. This is so if the chain does stretch or gain some slack while driving and decides to slip off the wheel, it will slip off the outside away from the car. If you tighten the links more on the inside than the outside, then if the chain slips off the wheel it's going to get caught up in your brakes, struts, CV axles, control arms etc. and that is dangerous and will cause damage and headache when you have the cables all tangled up on the inner side of the wheel. After, go for a drive a few houses down then pull a U-turn back home, check and re-tighten where needed (again adjust to make sure outside links are done tighter than the inside). Once that is done mark the links you used so in the future you know. Then the next time you need to use them, tighten the inner link to your pre-marked one, the outer may not make it all the way to it's marked one yet, that's okay. Get it snug, drive down the road 50 yards or so, then go back out and there should now be enough slack to get your outer link to where you marked it previously. Keep a pair of good gloves and a vice grip or two in the case.

These work...
I logged in just to recommend these chains. This was my first time using them, and they worked perfect. Simple to install, although you will have to get on your knees and possibly back to get the inner lock of chain secure. I was able to get through 1km of rough gravel/snow to my cabin where it was impossible the week before. Note to VW owners...be sure to check the snow clearance as you proceed if its deep. The Jettas are so low that the snow built up as I travelled. I simply backed up slowly to clear, and then proceeded. Sturdy case is compact and perfect for storage. Would purchase again.

Broke after 3 days of use
I purchased this just before a big snow storm. Installed the chains only after jacking up my car for an easier install. There was a noise which came from the wire that come loose from the plastic clips. After about 30 mins the noise came back and I had to use zip tide it together to stop the noise. After about 75km of driving 1 of the cross member broke while driving. Tried to repair on the side the road and wasn't able to.I just zipped tide the broken cross member to the inside wire hub. Today as I was driving to a cleints office one side of the chain completely broken and lost somewhere on the roads, I only noticed after I parked. After leaving the cleints office, I drove to another cleint and on the way the other side of the chains broke. Now I don't have any chains just before another dump of snow

Good to get unstuck
Wouldn't want to drive any distance, but great to get out of a driveway in the morning and shovel later. They go on and off fast and easy.
