65018 Stylus 11-Lumen White LED Penlight, Black

First, I've found all LED lights that make outragous claims of average battery life of dozens to hundreds of hours is either misleading or totally wrong... no matter what brand or where you bought them from. They either go totally dark in much less than half the rated time, or have gone too dim to even read large print with the light pressed closely to the page. To even get close to half the rated life, skip the alkalines, you must use expensive lithium or the highest capacity NiMi rechargables available on the planet. So they all lie about or misrepresent your actual battery life. I'm sure some of them, if you put the most expensive batteries in the world in them, run the light almost to their rated battery life, if you take them into a fully darkend room, & hold the light to your face, strain your eyes, you will find the LEDs are still glowing very faintly... but that's not useful light. I haven't found AAAA rechargables or lithiums, but you won't need them. This is the only LED light I ever found that doesn't give you bull on battery life. It uses a single LED & 3 AAAA alkaline batteries that can be obtained cheap from many sources. Slightly longer than an oridinary pen, I take it everywhere, & is always with me at work. As an engineer, I've used it several times daily for over 6 months with the original batteries. I thought it might be getting a little dimmer so recently put fresh batteries in it. Although it got brighter, not significantly, so I put the old batteries back in. This light just won't die. Lot's brighter than any keychain light, it's as useful as most big lights. It fell 14' from a ladder onto solid concrete, into puddles, snow, & got paint & glue on it. Using harsh chemicals & scraping to get all the paint & glue off, it still looks & works like brand new. I don't know what they used to paint that light with, but there's not a scatch on it anywhere... no dents yet either. Solid & durable. Your best light will be the one that works when you need it to, & is close at hand. Best $14 I ever spent! Update: AAAA Batteries can be found right here at amazon. Just type AAAA or streamlight in the search box. The streamlight AAAA 6-pack runs $6-$7 & are really alkaline energizers. Also if you tear off the metal around a "copper top" alkaline 9 volt battery with a couple of pliers you'll find 6 aaaa batteries inside. But beware... the AAAAs inside the 9 volt battery have the polarity reversed! So you must put those in your light BACKWARDS. You should also stretch the light's spring out a little for a tight fit & better contact. This won't effect it if you go back to ordinary batteries, just make sure to get the polarity right.

Wow. This thing is bright. I actually bought this for testing ocular reflexes, but I'm a little bit afraid to use it on my patients (the package actually warns: "AVOID DIRECT EYE EXPOSURE"). It's a little long, but fits into a shirt pocket (or lab coat) fine. Solidly constructed. I haven't tried throwing it against a wall, but I think it would survive. The LED sticks out, so you could possible break that easily. I would recommend keeping the glare guard on (plastic sleeve that fits around the end of the light and shields the lateral edges of the bulb). Two convenient ways to turn it on: push button that you have to hold; or turn the cap and it will stay on. I just got it, so I can't comment on battery life. When I first received it, I immediately wrote a review saying that the light is very white. After having used it to look inside people's mouths, it's actually slightly bluish (it is more obvious when you use it to look at pinks/reds). How does it compare to similar lights? Coast Cutlery V16: nowhere near as bright as the Streamlight--but the Streamlight is almost twice as long, twice as thick, and weighs about three times as much. Coast Cutlery V9: short (half as long as Streamlight) and stubby (about 50% wider), and maybe a little heavier than the Streamlight. Its light is pretty good, but still not up to the Streamlight's (its size is perfect for key chains though). Eveready pen light: about the same thickness as the V9, but about twice as long. This is the heaviest of the bunch (probably because of the battery type--2 AAA's). It is not as sturdy as the others; but, as long as you don't do anything extreme, it will probably last you until the incandescent bulb dies. It is second in brightness to the Streamlight. Its light is much warmer in color temperature due to the incadescent bulb. Overall, I would recommend the Streamlight over any of the others based on its incredible light output. If you want a key chain light, then I would recommend the Coast Cutlery V9 (or one of their other key chain varieties).

great penlights for what ever they say they are used for........... Me, I use them for anything where I need a little more light.

I've been using this for a couple weeks now in the hospital to perform neuro exams. It has been very useful in that it's easy to operate by holding down the button and has a narrow beam so that I can easily see a crisp pupillary reflex without dealing with the pupil gradually constricting as I bring my light closer. As far as safety is concerned, I have no concerns that I would be doing any damage - this is no laser beam and less bright than if I was to walk outside on a sunny day in Florida (rare when was on my neurology rotation). I guess it could be uncomfortable if you kept it shining in someone's eyes, but not on a normal exam. And if you want to do the exam where you try to provoke nystagmus by temporality blinding someone (look it up, it's a good neuro test!), this would be the tool for you. It's a tad long, so I keep it in my larger coat pocket, not the breast pocket, but no biggie. I like the build because it looks and feels like a proper tool. The paint won't get easily chipped and the pieces won't loosen up over time like its popular, cheap predecessor. I haven't had to get replacement batteries yet, but I'm willing to pay that higher price to have to better form function.

I purchased this light to be used as a pen light at work on the ambulance. Unfortunately this light is much too bright for use as a penlight for checking pupils. I still use this product everyday for assorted other uses. It does work well for finding vein shadows on those hard to stick patients. Pros: It is very bright for its size. The battery last for quite a while, I've had it for approximately 4 months and it is still as bright as day one. The light itself is made of metal and is very strong. I have yet to scratch the finish. Very compact, it is the size of a tall pen. Cons: Too bright for checking pupils. It claims to produce only 10 lumens but is actually brighter than my 60 lumen 5.11 penlight. I understand for most uses that would be a good thing. Summary: This light is a great buy. It is very useful I just found that it wasn't useful for the purpose I intended it for but it has been extremely useful for lighting small places and finding vein shadows. I would still recommend this product to all my paramedic friends.

I had one of these penlights for about 5 years, and then lost it. I immediately purchased this exact replacement because my first penlight served so well. The single LED light is bright, the penlight itself is sturdy, not flimsy. On and off are easy with a twist of the base or a quick press of a button. The adjustable light shield allows a widely lit area, when desired, or adjusts to light a selected smaller area. The three AAAA batteries make for a nice slim light for the pocket.

I'm an M.D. in the US and I got this to use as an exam penlight for patients in the hospital and clinic. Other posters have commented that it is too bright for that purpose but I vehemently disagree with assessment. If you want a good pupil exam you need a bright light, especially when you're doing an exam around all the halogen lighting in the clinic and hospital, and even moreso when examining inpatients getting frequent IV narcotics with constricted pupils. If you want a good exam and you're actually trying to find an RAPD or real pathology then you need a bright light like this one provides. If you're just shining a light in someone's face so that you document "PERRL" and bill for the physical exam then keep your cheap penlight, but you're likely not getting a good exam. This will likely feel insanely bright compared to your current penlight, but my patient's haven't complained. And if need be you can just shine the edge of the beam into your patient's eye for their comfort, and if there's no response you can keep moving inward to shine all of the beam through the pupil if that's what it takes to get constriction. As far as the light itself, it feels very solidly constructed and I use the plastic/rubbery tip on the end to protect the LED. At first I thought it would bother me that you have to hold down the button to keep it on but it turns out this doesn't create any issues during my examination, and in the rare time that I need it to stay on it's very easy to twist the cap and make it stay lit. Otherwise, not having an on/off switch means that I never accidentally leave it on and burn through batteries. So if you're looking to use this as an exam penlight, I highly recommend it!

I planned on purchasing a Maglite Solitaire, but ended up choosing Streamlight's 65018 Stylus White LED Pen Light, having read the tepid Amazon reviews for the former, and the enthusiasm for the latter. This product is ingeniously designed and sturdy (the body is made of metal). The light emitted is surprisingly powerful, given the small size. "LED light" means that it propagates a white, halogen light: it is much more powerful than regular flashlights. It comes with a belt clip, a pierced cap if you need a focused beam, rather than a 360 degrees light (candle-style). By default, the light turns on by pressing one end of the pen, and turns off by releasing it. This is very handy for quick needs of light, like on your bedside (the reason I originally purchased this pen light). For those concerned about this kind of thing, this pen light is assembled in the US - not in China, for once. I had high expectations before receiving this product from Amazon. They are well surpassed, now that I have held and used this pen light. Overall, an amazingly practical product, especially for the price. I plan on purchasing a couple more: one for the car (maps and parking slips come to mind), and another one for my toolbox.

The first thing that at least I noticed about this penlight was that it's pretty LONG; almost an inch longer than most of the pens I keep around. But that's really not a huge deal. No, the most impressive thing about this light is that it's solid, durable, and long-lived. It feels like you could beat someone to death with it (if it weighed more; it really isn't heavier than a pen) and have the thing still come out working like a champ. It produces a bright, slightly blued beam (it claims white, but mine is decidedly more of a white-blue than a pure white) and I've used it for a few hours now without noticing any degradation of the batteries. Speaking about the batteries takes us into the negative points, though. The batteries- they're "AAAA"s, hard to find at the best of times. Shake the body, and the batteries inside rattle loudly. There's no way to lock the light on; you have to press and hold it if you want it to stay lit. And the little bulb that covers the LED should probably be recessed into the casing for protection, though it comes with a little plastic cap you can put on the end that adds a bit of length and some protection to it. Those little quibbles aside, though- for the price, it's an excellent penlight, durable, bright, long-lived, and very portable. Not only do I recommend it, I've bought a bunch more.
