Is there a place to store the chess pieces?

Yes. You could keep the pieces inside the chess board. That’s how I keep them. It’s foldable on the back side. Once folded, it will be like a box.

Are the chess pieces large enough or small?

I don't know how to quantify an answer to your question, other than to say that the pieces and board are proportionally correct. Put another way, the pieces are exactly the size you'd expect them to be on a board with these dimensions. My grandson loves this chess set.
