Q: What is the distance between the light and the plate? I'm afraid it maybe doesn't fit the large birds...

It is maybe six or 7 inches. But truly, this is the best birdfeeder I’ve had. I bought two of them. Cardinals absolutely love it, they perch on the edge all the time. And at night it is a beautiful solar light. The customer service on this company is excellent. I highly recommend it.!

Q: Anyone else have problems getting the solar rod into the other piece to be tightened?

Yes! I ordered two for Christmas gifts and my father in law had to really push the pieces together hard to get them to stay. Once he did that, they were perfect.
