Is there a way to order just the cone from your smaller model winder and do you know if it will fit on this device for extra fine yarns?

The main difference between the smaller models and large model Stanwood Needlecraft ball winders is the number of Yarn ounces they can wind on each bobbin. The small winders wind 4 oz. the larger unit will wind 10 oz., it should make no difference if the yarn being wound is fine or bulky. The great feature of the large winder is the clamping system, it is deep and really holds in place while winding yarns. You can purchase spare bobbins for small or large ball winders from Stanwood, but why? As stated earlier, the large metal ball winder can be used for all yarns.

I would love to know if knitters generally draw yarn from the center, & if so what (besides preventing cake from rolling around) are the advantages?

The advantage of pulling from the center is less twist as you unwind the yarn. When you wind it, you put a certain amount of twist in, but most of that is alleviated by the "wobble" of the ball winder. If you then unwind from the outside, there is an additional twist each time you unwrap the yarn from the top.

Is there a maximum diameter? I put my yarn in a jug while knitting and I need to make sure it will fit... TIA :-)

Yoy can make the cake as small as you want. The largest I was able to make is just over 5" in diameter.

what is the deepest thickness of a table/counter the winder can attach to?

It can accommodate approximately 11/2 inches. Maybe room for more but it's the best for the table I have which is six feet long and 1 inch thick
