Using the Pondmanster 9.5 950 Gallon Per Hour Pump to heat a swimming pool...
I got a great price on an 18 foot round pool, then discovered WHY! Almost nobody wanted that size pool! It is rather huge, and it holds 5500 gallons of COLD WATER!!! What to do??? Too cold to swim in, especiallly in this cool, wet summer! I ended up throwing 600 feet of 3/4 inch black poly pipe on my roof, using my pool's filter pump to push the water through the pipe and back into the pool. Well, it almost worked. But the pool's pump is made to push water a short distance and it just wasn't pushing enough water through that pipe. So I bought this Danner Pondmaster 9.5 from Amazon. Decent price, sounded good. It arrived soon enough. I tried hooking it up, but the connections to the pump weren't easy. It comes with a plastic cage as a filter - NOT the FOAM filter advertised on Amazon. On the Danner website it does in fact clearly state that the foam filter comes with the SMALLER versions of this pump. Not really a concern to me. The plastic cage works. I didn't want to put the pump in the pool and electrocute myself, but found no easy way to connect to the pump's intake. No choice, so into the pool it went! I couldn't find a good way to connect to the pump's outlet. I ended up using plastic electrical tape to make a butt connection - I just taped the end of the 3/4 inch poly pipe to the pump! I taped it with about 6 layers, then I overlaid that with about 6 layers of cheap duct tape. I'm pleased to say that it worked! The joint is still holding. The pump has enough power to push water through the loop, which goes up to my roof, then over to the west facing side. There's a fair amount of pressure involved because it is NOT easy to push water through 1/7th of a mile of pipe! It is August 30th. The summer has been COOL at best. Before I got the Danner pump I got the water to 77 degrees AT BEST. Yesterday it was up to 82 degrees - 1st full day of use - and swimming was a LOT more pleasant! I actually got wet all over for the first time. Understand that I live in the mountains at 3600 feet elevation, I'm using an above ground pool, and I have only the pool cover that came with it, which isn't much of a cover. My jury-rigged pool heater got the pool almost as warm as the day itself, I think with another 400 foot coil of pipe I can keep swimming maybe into October. Not bad... I do think I'm going to 1000 feet of pipe. I want to get it warmer still! I've bought a "solar pool cover" which maybe will be here today, and expect that to help with the pool heat. Still, adding pipe will extend my swimming season and that's what it is all about. So far I'm rather impressed with the improvement in heat transfer this pump is delivering. It circulates the water throught the pipe quickly enough that it does not get hot. That's important because if the water in the pipe gets too hot the heat just radiates away and you're spinning your wheels. I am BIG on solar - I used it to heat my house in the winter and will be doing batch solar water heat soon. I looked into heating the pool bigtime. What I learned from my research proved to me that the ONLY way to go is solar! With this pump my idea moved from interesting if not particularly productive to something practical. By the way... I didn't get electrocuted! We swam in the pool WITH the pump - no problems. The pump appears to be well made, it works well, and everything is sealed, so it should be safe for the rest of this swimming season. NEXT year I will come up with a better way to install the pump outside of the pool - I already have the bypass rig set up for that. But for this year? Swim on! Bottom line: The pump was a good investment. It runs quietly and reliably (so far), and it is up to the task of pushing plenty of water through pretty small pipe. I definitely reccomend this pump.

Performs like an unstoppable beast
This pump is a beast. I replaced one that lasted 16-years, much of it with continuous weeks of operating without pause. As such, it was an easy decision to get the same make and model to keep my fountain running. The new one is submurged in a ponded and enclosed area beneath a very large rock enclosure. The long extension cord is very thick and reinforced to withstand weathering over the years. As soon as I plugged this in and flipped the switch, this moved the large quantity water very quickly to the top of the water feature, and kept it going. It has brought our fountain back to life, and now I have the old pump that still works, and will take apart and clean and restore to full working order as a back-up (or sell). Great value for the price and compact enough to fit into confined spaces.

Danner makes a good garden pond pump
This is my second Danner, the first one lasted for 8-10 years running constantly, 24 hours a day 7 days a week, spring, summer, fall and winter. It would still be functioning if I had correctly diagnosed a problem it was having and replaced the parts it needed that were readily available and easy to install. Regarding the new one, I like the redesigned rigid intake filter versus the one on my old pump, it was too flimsy and would collapse when it began to become clogged. Make sure you filter the intake from small debris that can damage the impeller. They are very easy to replace but not cheap. The video is from a fountain I built using 3/4 and 1/2 inch copper and some brass fountain nozzles from Amazon. The pump (a 950 GPH model) supplied more that enough flow to shoot the water higher than I needed, in fact I had to install a diverter valve to bleed off some of the pressure. Taking into consideration that the circuit also has a biofilter connected in line this is pretty impressive performance.

not durable but exceptional customer service
after 8 hour per day for 10 months, it stopped pumping water. I cleaned the turbine chamber, but it did not help. I called the customer service. They are extremely helpful and I got my replacement by mail in a week or so.

Building my cost effective KOI pond
Having studied the various options on how to build my own KOI pond for the last 3 years, I am now settled on a very comfortable 300 Gallon tank with a design that will allow me to add a little more fishes as needed. Here are the components and my reviews for each of them 300 Gallon Rubber Maid stock tank (bought from ZOROTOOL.COM ** because it is $100-$150 cheaper for the unit with free delivery. sorry Amazon !!) Laguna Pressure-Flo 700 UVC Filter (ASIN: B001BOBPBM) TotalPond PF850 Pressurized Biological Filter (ASIN: B004DL0Y4O) Danner Mag Drive Pump Model 9.5 -950 gph (ASIN: B0002568G8) (1) Rubber Maid tank Well, it is a nice size tank for KOI. I now have 7 KOI's sizes between 6 - 12 inches. I plan to have may be 2-3 more in the next few months. I know that 300 Gallon may not be a good size for them after they grow to >24 inch but I intend to make it work with over filtering design. To me, this will be several more years, as I am not the "over feeding" owner :-) The tank is made with good strong and "fish safe" material. It is quite sturdy in design and able to handle the load of water (completely filled up) without a doubt. it just happened that it rained a lot once I got this tank, so I tested to full capacity with rain water (from down sprout) for a few days. by putting it on my backyard concrete patio. So far, no sign of bending or cracking. The drain plug (included) comes with threaded (1.5 in OD PVC adapter) was very handy to drain out those water when I was ready to move it for real installation. (2) Danner Mag Drive Pump This is the first component of my "over filtering" design. The pros recommend that the whole volume of the pond be completely circulated through filter at least twice in an hour. In my case, a 600 GPH pump should be enough, but I compensate for the smaller pipe and some flow rate loss etc. I estimated that my actual flow rate out of my system will still be somewhat 700+/-50 GPH from this pump. The pump is made with good quality material, the only moving part is that impeller. Having Magnetic drive technology is extremely important, because it will be running 24/7 for 365 days a year. I want to make sure that the pump will not pumping money out of my bank as much as it does for the water. Having checking calculation from may reputable web site, this thing will cost me around $3-$5 a month in electricity. Not bad at all. I gave it 5 stars. (3) TotalPond PF850 Pressurized Biological Filter In my design, I am looking for some kind of enclose trap. Such that, the unwanted debris of leaves, fish drops etc. will be collected here first. This way there will be much less of this stuff that will go to the next filtering stage. It turns out, this thing come with it's own sponge and bio balls - so it serves as an extra bio filter to my design. This filter is made of some okay type of plastic. The connectors to the water pipe will have to be tighten from the inside of the filter - I found this to be a spot where I need to pay a little extra attention. The lid also comes with extra O-ring to prevent leakage - but still it has to be really tighten up real good. In my design, my MAG DRIVE pump will push the water straight from the tank into this filter, hence there will be high a pressure for this filter. So, tighten things up really good is very important. This is where I take 1 star from it - I found this to be a little tricky to get it just right. (4) Laguna Pressure-Flo 700 UVC Filter This is where I expect my real action for my bio filter and algae prevention. Having inspect the unit, I am quite convinced that I have made the right choice. Material is well made with good quality kind. It has a well design bio foam with cleaning blade and back flush - - if you are the first timer to having back yard pond. Trust me, you need this feature for your filter. It also comes with built-in UV light. Althogh only 11 Watts, I was not quite sure if it will hold. But again, with over filtering design, I hope it will. Only time will tell. Installation and testing was easy to do - no big deal for DIY at all. So far, it works well for me - I gave it 5 stars. In my design, it connects like this Rubber Maid tank - -> 3/4 pipe - -> MAG DRIVE PUMP - -> 3/4 pipe - -> Total Pond - ->3/4 pipe - -> Laguna Filter - -> Rubber Maid Tank I'm in GA, our winter is not that cold but there are days where it gets below freezing. So, with helps of my kid, I decided to bury 1/3 of the tank into the ground. The filter + pump are at ground level. When filling it up, I can still get the benefit of gravity to help flow the water. Digging + Installation to me 1.5 days. I filled it up and run it to check for leaks - by the end of the second day - all leakages were fixed. That when I start to add the enzyme (same thing I used with my earlier aquarium tank) / salt and stuff to prepare the water. Then I let it run for 8 days to make sure the good bacteria are well adjusted. Testing pH - - it was perfect. My KOI's have been living in this system now for 2 weeks. The location of my pond is such that it has some shade most of the day from near by trees. Only between 11am - 2pm that it will be in full sun. I build a floating basket (24 in diameter) that I plan to plant water lily - this thing is a perfect shade for the fish during full sun. I noticed that between day 3-5 the water was a little less than crystal clear but it is still clear. After that, it slowly return to crystal clear - I guess the bacteria was adjusting to the increase amount of nitrate and stuff that my KOI's dumped out. So far, I am pretty happy with this design. Well, it seems to be working for 2 weeks now (fingers' crossed). My neighbors like it and asked that I share the design. I will do some drawing and pictures when I have a moment. Total cost (excluding the fish), my system costs me <$800 and running cost is around $10-$15 a month (electricity + fish food). I know the cost will grow a bit more as I start thinking about more decorations and adding some water fall etc. But . . . it definitely worth every penny - - compare to the much better atmosphere in my back yard.

Lasted for 6 mos and died. Tried cleaning it and it died...now it rattles and the flow is horrible.
Not sure why but this pump worked great for about 6 mos. I cleaned the filter and the pump on the 2nd and 4th months and now it won't work anymore. I even used special pump cleaner, but it's still not pumping through the same rate/flow of water it was when I first purchased it. I have a 250 gallon mini pond with a water feature in the center. I got this pump to account for pumping the water up through the hose in the middle of the water feature which is about 4 ft high. Like I said, it worked perfect the first 2 mos. I cleaned and it worked for another 2 mos, but around month 5 & 6 it started making weird noises. I bought special pond pump cleaner and followed the directions, but it still rattles and suction and outflow are horrible. I did lots of research before getting this and I'm not sure why this didn't perform. Wish I could get my money back. Don't Buy without doing research!

This is a very solid design, built to last
I love these danner pumps. I really like that they haven't changed the design in close to 30 years. I have had some of these last continuous for 20 years. Parts are easily accessible. These are built like a tank. Very heavy and solid feeling. They work great submerged or inline. My only complaint, is they are not completely silent but are far quieter than other pumps I've used. The selling point for me is how solid they feel and they last forever. I will continue to buy these pumps and I will probably get out of the aquatic business if they stop making this design.
