The 16.5" includes the handle. Dimensions for toaster slots are 10" x 1.5" and can hold bagels and other thicker breads.

where doe the cord come out, front back or side, and how long is it please...

The cord comes out of the bottom near the end by the push-down lever. It is 42" long (or 40 inches beyond that end of the toaster) Don't forget to allow for the height of the plug above the counter plus about 4 inches for turning the plug into the outlet. Extra cord can be wrapped under the toaster and the cord can come out anywhere except the four corner feet.
