I'm in love

This is one of the best backpacking and general camping purchases I have made in a long time. I'm now a firm believer in the art of hammock camping. I'm a big guy - 6'1" and 240lbs - and I have no issues at all fitting into and sleeping like a baby in this hammock. Deployment and take-down are now both done within 1 minute (using the separately-purchased Hennessy Snakeskins - XL). I feel stable and secure in this hammock even at my weight, and once you learn how to hang it right and how to lay in it offset, you can actually lay flat. I don't mind the slight curve of a hammock as it cradles you when laying end to end, but just offset yourself and you'll feel your back rise and before you know it you're laying flat like you're in a regular bed.Pros:- I bought this for it's weight capacity and because it had the built-in no-see-um bug mesh. Design fit was perfect- Comes ready to set up. All you need are tree straps or some other suspension system to make hanging even easier. The provided rope is enough to do the job on smaller trees, but consider a better strap system to protect trees and making deployment much faster- Strong material - holds my weight without stretching or straining- Included stitched-on stabilizer loops on the bottom of each side of the hammock for attaching guy lines to the ground, making the hammock more stable or just for holding it spread open more- Comes with enough elastic cordage to suspend the netting in multiple different ways- This thing is big. It's not really designed for 2 people, but it fits me great. I have room above my head and beyond my feet to really stretch out, and the width is more than sufficient for even the broadest-shouldered men to sleep in without being crammed. It's also wide enough to grab the sides and wrap it around yourself like a cocoon if you need to.Cons:- The bug mesh is great, but you need to get crafty with it to keep it out of your way at night. Make sure to suspend the mesh ONLY with a flexible expandable cordage (like what is provided) so when you get in your hammock and it pulls down, it doesn't tear this mesh. I also use some 2' small sticks to hold the 2 sides of the mesh apart a bit, preventing mesh sag on me when I sleep. Not a big deal, but you'll figure it out- As with all hammocks, if you're in cold temperatures and the wind kicks up, then you're in for a cold night if you don't have the proper layers beneath you. Not a take-away from this hammock specifically, but I would be in heaven if this hammock were double-layered in some way to be able to slip some insulation between the two. I just bought a Goretex bivvy that is wind/waterproof to put over my sleeping bag when I know it's going to be cold/windy out. Problem solved.I have been taking this hammock with me on local hikes when I know I'll have trees to set it up at the end. There's nothing better than getting outdoors to explore a new area, and once you've arrived you have a fast way to set up off the bugs and take a very comfortable, bug-free break. I couldn't be happier with this product.

I'm throwing out my tent!

I have been a life-long tent camper, but the last time I hiked all day and woke up stiff and poorly-rested, I decided that something had to give. A friend recommended hammocks instead, so I bought two of these bad boys for my boyfriend and I, and literally just got back from trying it out.Two words: Buy it.This tent is light, easy to set up (with all the necessary equipment included), and COMFORTABLE. The bug netting is extremely effective as well. We went canoe-camping on a very buggy lake in the South and I had no overnight bites. The hammock is attached to a stuff sack that is conveniently positioned to stow things you want handy overnight, like headlamps and water bottles. This is an excellent feature, considering that once you lay in this delightful sling, you won't want to get up. Though we didn't attempt to fit two folks in one hammock, it seems like there's enough room to try. The bug netting is pretty non-intrusive, and doesn't hit your face or interfere with hammocking. Boyfriend said it felt like sleeping in a space pod.We usually backpack on a pretty amateur/ casual level, and I'm looking forward to taking my Skeeter Beeter into the wilderness. I have a few words of advice --buy a rain fly. Boyfriend was smart and bought a 13' x 10' fly that protected all of his gear from the torrential downpour we encountered. I tried to scrape by with an 8' x 6' ground tarp and had to use ponchos to make up the difference.-upgrade to some nicer carabiners. The steel ones included are effective, but you can find lighter, more user-friendly ones for a decent price.

Comfy camping hammock: best under $100

I got this hammock to replace my tent for backpacking trips. Let's assume that's what you're shopping for. Here's a breakdown:1: A hammock setup is lighter than a tent, right?Yes and no. What you lose in stake weight and raw material, you pick back up in suspension and rainfly. Expect a hammock setup to weigh about the same as a two-man tent, especially in the winter.2: Hammocks are more comfortable than tents, right?Yes and no. If you lie at an angle, have a good pad and insulation setup, and aren't claustrophobic; sure you can have a great night's sleep. Sleeping in a hammock is comparable to sleeping in a tent. Be prepared to carry the extra weight of an underquilt in colder months or you'll have a cold butt. Also know that if you're a side sleeper, you may be very uncomfortable in a hammock. Sleeping on your back is the only real option for hammock comfort. Also, yes, this hammock can be hung upside down if you don't wanna use the netting. It's just as comfortable, just make sure there's no sharp sticks under your hammock to tear the netting.Down to specifics for this hammock: I was torn between this hammock and the ENO Junglenest. The SB is good in price and headroom. It's significantly cheaper than the ENO. The netting has 4 hanging points that gives you a more box-shaped headspace than the ENO. This is good if you wanna read a book or lounge in your hammock for an extended time. What is annoying is that you have to hang two additional stretchy ridgelines to have that comfort. The ENO wins in build quality and ease of setup. It hangs the net from a single ridgeline, so it's easy to do. Of course, you don't have the comfortable headroom that the SB has.The two hammocks tie in material quality and build quality. They are both well stitched, use similar materials and netting. The ENO edges out the SB by a nose because the tie-points for the ENO have metal grommets and stitched canvas attachments. The SB has elastic straps stitched right into the netting. This means a mistaken pulling of the netting on either hammock would be more likely to tear the SB than the ENO.I'm very happy with this purchase, but if I had to buy again, I'd probably buy the ENO because I'd rather have a more solid stitch on the netting attachments than headroom.
