this masterpiece is amazing; I had no idea. This is like reading a history book on political thought. This sage didn't invent double entry bookkeeping, he simply described what the merchants were already doing.I got this book after discovering the editor Schemmann's AMZN reviews of "Money and Trade Consider'd" by the famous Mr. Law, and "100% Money" by America's "greatest ever" economist, Irving Fisher (according to M. Friedman). 5 stars each, though opposite thesis books. Then Schemmann wrote to the BOE about banks mixing up demand deposits and time deposits as the obvious cause of boom-bust cycles, describing banks as a "casino houses" getting rewarded for gains when central banks are loose and bailed out at taxpayer expense (when central banks get even looser) thus, pleading (forcefully) for Irving Fisher's 100% Money book plan to avoid "financial crises every decade since "John Law and the Bank of Amsterdam". Mervyn King responded favorably. You can google that PDF off IICPA website probably.Must be nice to be an Ivy League grad (ie part of this casino club)

I have no training in bookkeeping of any kind, and I felt there was a gap in my education, so when I found out that Pacioli's book was available in translation in an inexpensive paperback I sent for it and read it. As Pacioli emphasizes, one must read chapters 2 and 3. These are about inventory. As he does not emphasize, one must read chapter 27. It is about "profit and loss." The other chapters tell the reader how to be a cooperative and respected and successful merchant of Venice. Literally. It is not a bit like Shakespeare's play.

This is an approachable translation that is limited to the section of Pacioli's working concerning accounting. Still not a book to snuggle up with on a cold winter's night.

Luca is the Elon of double-entry bookkeeping. Really inspiring. Changed my life.

Luca Pacioli's text is the basis of modern double entry book-keeping and as such represents a major point in the history of finance and accounting.This is an English translation from the Medieval Italian of the original. As such it's not easy to read to modern eyes, though the translator has done an excellent job of making it accessible to the modern reader.The tone of this text is quite friendly and quirky and is delivered almost as a conversation, a format that was common at the time.He starts off by introducing the basic principals of documenting a business and of the three books that need to be used to track your accounts properly. He then goes into how entries should be made into each book and how they relate to each other and to mercantile practices at the time. Finally, he works through how to balance and check the books and some unusual and complex scenarios that occur in running a business.

I had hoped for a more comprehensive understandable book.
