Are the handles detachable like some of Rome's other products?

No, they are not. It might be they unscrew in some fashion but I have not seen a way to do so in my use of them.I have only focused on using them with the handles however, but I don't see a way to detach them just by glancing at them.

can this be used as a waffle iron? I understand that they have a waffle iron but only makes 3.5 inch squares. I like the 8.5 x 4.25 size more.

It could work but the waffle grid is not there. Also, they could be rather thin. We love ours and try new things every time we are camping.

Where is this pie iron made?

Sorry, I haven't a clue what country the pie iron was made in. judging how flimsy it is constructed, one of the 'Pacific Rim' countries would be a good bet.

How does it lock shut?

A little metal clip that is attached to one handle, hooks over the other, holding them together, and the iron shut
