In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson: A Classic Sports Story About Baseball, Friendship, and Finding Home in 1947 Brooklyn for Kids (Ages 8-12)

As an immigrant to this country, I laughed when the main character recited The Pledge of Allegiance as "I pledge allegiance to the frog..." That's EXACTLY how I recited it until the classmate next to me explained that the word was flag, not frog. I loved this book with its immigrant experience!

Good quality product, careful packaging, and quick delivery. A great tale of an immigrant child finding a hero and a life in a new place.

This is an incredible children's book!!! I cannot stress enough how much I loved it. I ordered this for my mom because she is an elementary English teacher. She bought this as one of the books to read with her class and is so glad she did. She has just adored this book! It is so cute and very accurate. She has been able to plan lots of fun activities with her students including a rewards system with candy and baseball cards, just like from the story. She also was able to bring fortune cookies to class and the kids enjoyed that, too. She has had so much fun with this book and it has been really cool for her to see the students enjoy the book and have some fun reading and learning about a girl their age from a different culture and time. She also got to talk with the students about the Chinese zodiac and explain to them what that is and what it means. She has had a blast with the book and so have the kids! If you're considering getting this for your child or someone you know, I highly recommend it!! It is so cute and this book is great. Very well written and very appropriate for elementary school kids! Give it a shot! You won't regret it :)

I just received this teacher's guide two weeks ago and I really love the lesson vocabulary, extension activities, and chapter quizzes. The only improvement to be made is on the quality of the questions for the chapter. Otherwise, it really takes the time out of planning lessons and quizzes for such a great book.

I FRIST READ THIS DELIGHTFUL FUN BOOK A LONG TIME AGO. I JUST LOVED IT. I HAVE A NEW HARD BACK COPY OF IT. THAT IS IF I GET IT BACK FROM THE LADY WHO WORKS HERE WHO CAME IN TO ASK IF I HAD IT. SO HER SON COULD READ IT FOR A BOK REPORT. I DON'T THINK HE WILL LIKE IT VERY MUCH IT IS ABOUT A LITTLE CHINESE GIRL SHIRLEY TEMPULE WONG. SORRY FOR MISSPELLING OF NAME. ANYWAY IT IS A WONDERFUL BOOK FOR LITTLE GIRLS I DON'T THINK LITTLE LIKE IT AT ALL. NOT ABOUT BOYS WILL HOPE AND PRAY IG ET IT BACK ORDERD PAPERBACKCOPY OF IT SO I WILL HAVE IT I LOVED THE BOOK.

I bought this so that students can see what difficulties people have when they emigrate to our country. Very good lesson!

This book was amazing. It talked about a Chinese girl who went to America and had to adapt with all the changes. It funny no she coped with them. I did questions on the book for school. She even got to meet her role model. She was not he fifth grade, I'm in 6th. Anyway, I recommend this book to anyone who reads it because it's funny, lovable, and family-friendly.

A very on-point view of immigration from a child’s view. Though set many decades ago, this story of young Shirley Temple Wong, is very similar to the story of many young immigrant children today. I read this story as a child, then bought for my 10 year old. She read it in one sitting, because it is very engaging.

Being myself a non english speaking child to move to the States at a tender age, I guess intuitively I just loved the book as a child. Over 30 years on I got a new copy and enjoyed it so much, written so well, realistic and full of character. Perfect for kids to enjoy and with a nice little message on tolerance, social diversity and the magic of being different and unique.
