Does the ice stay frozen in the bin for an extended period of time?

Kinda. The storage bin is nothing more than an insulated ice chest. So your warmer room temps and direct sun on the machine will reduce the time the ice will remain as ice. That's why this unit needs a drain. That's your ice melting, so quit hugging your new machine! :). But the good news is, your machine will continue to make ice to replace that which melted by your hugging. Also, if you will need a lot of ice soon, make sure you rake the cubes away from the ice exit and toward the front of the storage bin.
