I've used this "bumper" for many years now, works great, very tough. Cleaned up and old large timber axe, put on a new handle, then added the "bumper." All axes need one unless replacing the axe handle is a favorite hobby. I boiled the bumper for 4 minutes, turned red in the face and grunted, added some WD40 to handle and cursed and got the bumper on. Then with a hammer I carefully knocked the bumper into place. Typical process. I now have a handle that I will not likely ever replace. The Bummer is Excellent. Adds a few ounces in weight and power too. smile

These really save your axe handles! Easy to put on and a no brainer!

I've been using these 'handle savers' for probably 20+ years. I can't begin to tell you how many handles they have saved me on my splitting mauls - especially the wood-handled ones. They take a beating and keep on protecting the shaft. I bought this one because the very first one I bought over two decades ago is starting to split, and it's earned a vacation! Don't split wood without one of 'em on your maul!

A friend has one. It works okay. A fireman taught me a better way. Wrap the neck with a single layer of friction tape, then tightly wind the neck with 12 gauge copper wire, then cover with electrical tape to hold the wire in place, repeat another layer of wire & electrical tape. The wire & tape will handle a great deal of abuse before it needs to be redone.For a very simple protection, take a piece of pvc, I always have small scrap setting around, wrap enough duct tape around the neck so that the pvc goes on hard enough so that it will not slide off. The pvc will not take much punishment & will split, so it is better for tools that you seldom need protection for. On the other hand, if you do miss, instead of having a tore up handle, you only have a broken piece of scrap pvc. Anyone who does any plumbing will have a lifetime of pvc scrap that are too short for plumbing to replace the broken up pvc. While the pvc method is super quick, I recommend the wire & tape method for any handle that will be taking a repeated beating.Personally, if I were going to order one of these, I'd buy one that was a little longer. Sometimes I'll hit what I'm hammering with the head of the hammer, but not squarely. Sometimes the hammer will glance off & I'll end up damaging the hammer's handle a little further up the handle than what this product will protect.

I use those protectors on on all my tools. they worth every penny.

Just what I was looking for. I was able to warm it up and slide it over the handle without removing the head. If you've ever had one, then you know what it's good for.
