You can't say you love my art if you aren't willing to engage this ...
I was introduced to Robert Mapplethorpe sometime in the early 1990's, and his art and humanity have stuck with me since. I am a heterosexual Black male, and I find his homo-erotic images to be quite affecting. His graphic photography involving male genitalia and overt sexuality, seem to be saying "this is my lifestyle and my art. You can't say you love my art if you aren't willing to engage this content". I agree with him. Some might protest the "objectification" of Black males in the book. The energy of the men in the photos seem to suggest that it was a collaboration and that to some degree all photography involves the objectification of the person being being photographed. I think the Black Book is beautiful. KD, Burlington, VT

Unbelievable beautiful book. Noticed it first time, few years ago in the bookstore. I love it from the first sight.Showed it to my wife who was with me but didn't buy it. And this book was gone from book store when I came back to buy it.I didn't remember photographer nor exact title, Took me 3 -4 years to get it. Saw it in AGO and didn't let it go. Now I have two of them. Great one.
